DC People: How annoying is the phrase "Reagan Airport"??
It's been almost eight years since they changed the name, and I'm still no less pissed about it. Remember when the Repukes claimed that they weren't going to take George Washington's name off? Well, it's still called Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, but of course people now just call it "Reagan" or "Reagan Airport" or "Reagan National."

I'm guessing that 99.9% of DUers refuse to call it by that name, but what do you do when people refer to it as that to you? Ignore it? Say something smide? Just curious.

P.S. I know that this is a random post, but I just came back from there and I'm slightly burned up by it.

33. Suit yourself, but consider this
The airport is small and outmoded and would have been retired years ago were it not so convenient for overpaid bureaucrats.

I thought hanging Reagan's name on the places was nearly as fitting as hanging his name on that infamous office building that ran WAY over budget with cost overrun piled on top of cost overrun as they loaded as much gilt and marble as they could into it without making it collapse under the burden.

Other memorials would be loan default notices and bad checks.

56. What about the US Office Of The National Debt? Covers an entire city block
South of the Mall in DC.

Also, Washington National IS the correct abbreviation and is a beautiful airport (even with the tacked-on name) and Washington Post stylesheet was changed for political reasons to abbreviate it incorrectly becase Donald Graham is a Reaganite. Much worse are traffic reporters and vapid hoteliers who refer to it as "Reagan", a sure sign of a Republican from out in the countryside.

National is also one of the only vintage 1930's airport terminals still in use in the US. The kind PDX, etc. pretends to model itself on.

(although I should have known) until I made the mistake of calling it that among a group of DUers in DC on 9/24. I sure got set straight in a hurry. :spank: But please feel sorry for us here in Anchorage -- we have Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and almost had Don Young's Way or some such crap -- the bridge to nowhere. I use the name, on occasion. I usually simply call it DCA. My problem was in naming an airport after a living person. I know it's more and more common, but it's so Banana Republic.

18. What pisses me off about the name is the repugs are guilty of
re-writing history. Sound familiar? Of course it does, it is what repugs do all the time but pretend it is a tactic of the Dems. I get really steamed about Washington National because I am one of the millions of people who remember Raygun's administration - corrupt, sleazy, profane and sold out to the highest corporate bidder. It is the holdovers from Ronnie's day that are messing with my country today. Raygun was senile for last six years in office and somehow the repugs think no one will remember the state this country was in due to his and Bush41's mismanagement if they just name a fricking airport after the asshole.

Other than that I don't care.

11. I actually don't give a shit what they call it. I just wish they would
put up som decent signage telling how to get to it. Going south on 395 there should be signage in the tunnel telling you which lane to be in for National Airport. And then there should be better signs south of the Pentagon telling you exactly where the airport exit is - it is DAMN confusing. Going North on 395 isn't much better. It is as if there is an attempt to hide where the damn airprot is.

- if you got all riled up and quit using a service or area or building because you didn't agree with the politics of a place name you probably wouldn't be able to travel very far. They just christened the road in front of my house "Ronald Reagan Highway".

Dang, guess I've got to buy a helicopter to get to the store . . .

Of course, I think the change was idiotic. Most people around the area don't call National "Reagan national". The local news stations use reagan national and national interchangealby with the exception of WTOP but I try to ignore it. I did get really pissed when they forced metro to waste thousands of dollars to change every freakin sign to reagan washington national airport though.

Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 09:35 PM by JPZenger
It was Washington National Airport. When the Repugs tried to change it to Ronnie Raygun Airport, the Demos should have voted for George Washington Airport. I heard that Repugs in Congress threatened the Metro system because their signs still said "National Airport." They made Metro change all their signs.

My favorite irony is that the most expensive government office building ever built was named after Ronnie Raygun. He is honored by an incredibly expensive home for a whole bunch of bureaucrats.

41. haven't flown in or out since the name change
but did frequently in the 80s, thus in my mind it is still "DC National Airport" (or 'national' for short) - can't say that this would be the case if I lived there (sometimes over time these things just seep in.)

Ironic the name, I remember a time when the airport, and all of crystal city were in near lock-down - due to fear of retaliation of reagan's line in the sand threat to Quadafi. There were real fears of a retaliatory strike on national airport. Can't recall why the airport was feared to be the target - just that it was.

I like the idea to rename stuff like landfills after these turds! I can see it totally! "The George W. Bush County Landfill"! BEAUTIFUL!
