I've been told to *gasp* move to Canada.
It all started with an email. You know the one. "Wear red on Friday's to support our troops!" The subject line said "Don't you agree?" This was sent to me by a childhood friend's mother who I haven't heard from since the 2004 election when she was sending me all of her Bush/Cheney for re-election crap. So she knows how I feel as I've told her in no uncertain terms that Bush/Cheney were criminals and the only house the deserved to be sent to was the big house. First off - I have a nephew in Iraq doing his second tour of duty there - and I am not real happy about that. Still no body armor for these boys. Well, of course I hit "reply all" and you can only imagine. Here's the exchange I had with a student at Indiana University:

Me: Let's face it. The best way to support our troops - and I have a nephew there on his second "tour" of Iraq - is to bring them home. Wearing red, or any other color for that matter, won't bring them home. Exposing this administration's lies and getting our troops a quick exit strategy is the only way of showing our support.

Peace!

im10ashus

Him: I am replying to your email that you sent to dozens of people in response to a forward someone sent you. First of all, I don't think any of us really cared to receive your reply. We didn't ask for the original forward and we definitely didn't ask for your opinion on it. Secondly- your political beliefs have NOTHING to do with the fact that there are thousands of men in Iraq serving our country and fighting. While you may not like Bush and CLAIM he lies, what does that have to do with supporting our troops? Nothing. While you may not agree with the reason they were sent, does this mean they do not need your support? No. Many of the men fighting did not want to go, but they still need to know America supports them?you do not have to support the president to support our troops. Calling George Bush a liar is not support. God Bless America and I pray this war will end soon.

Next time you wish to talk about "exposing this administration's lies," please do it in a political forum- NOT to email users who did not ask to receive it.

xoxoxo xoxoxo
Student, Indiana University

Me:First off, if you are so in support of this war and this president - and his administration who manipulated the intelligence to get us there - why aren't you in Iraq? You are of age to go and fight. I have served in the military and I do support our troops. That's not even the issue here. My "claims" that Bush lied are not claims at all. They are based on fact.

Supporting our troops is a lot different than supporting a corrupt administration. Remember, this is America. I pay taxes and I will be damned if I am going to keep my opinions to myself. Bush lied and people died. If "wearing red on Friday's" is the only way you can think of to show support, then you may want to go that extra mile, and put on the uniform and pick up a weapon. Chicken hawks like you who refuse to back up your "patriotism" by enlisting in the military and fighting for this country do nothing to support our troops. You only expose yourself for the coward that you are.

You said: Next time you wish to talk about "exposing this administration's lies," please do it in a political forum- NOT to email users who did not ask to receive it.

I say: I didn't ask to receive the initial email in the first place and it IS a political email when you mass email this kind of crap. I haven't heard from Ms. xoxo in over a year, and she knows how I feel about this war criminal we call our president.

Him: I am proud to be in support of both our troops and our nation's government.

You have once again made a fool of yourself. I am 20 years old, and of perfect age to enlist in the military (you were correct- PARTLY) except for the fact that I have chronic health problems that the military has informed me prevents me from enlisting. Perhaps you should research things more before making ignorant claims such as this in the future. In fact, chicken hawk is a perfect term...not to describe me, but to describe YOU. IF YOU have a problem with our administration, I would like to point out that you are of a proper age in which to run for a political office. Instead, you choose to cower and rather criticize everyone who IS in Washington trying to make a difference. Unlike me, who has health problems preventing me from serving our country, what is your excuse? I will no longer hold this conversation in front of 30 other email users, but decided to send my reply in response to your ignorant, uneducated claims about me serving in the military. Good day. No response is needed, "chicken hawk."

xoxo xoxo
A Proud American
Sophomore, Indiana University Bloomington

Dear "Proud American" - When you start paying my bills, including my internet bill, you can tell me to whom and what I can reply. Until then, you are in no position to tell me what to do. You support this government? You are as a big a fool as I first suspected. Just because I have no aspirations of holding a political office, does NOT mean I am not allowed to voice my opinion. Good luck, chicken hawk!

Him: Perhaps you should move to Canada since you don't like what is going on. You are very ignorant, and not worth my time.

Me: Move to Canada? That's a laugh. Spoken like a true conservative. Where'd you get that line? The Karl Rove handbook? I will stay here and fight for the rights that all American's should - the freedom to dissent. It's what our country was founded on. Move to Canada indeed. You'd like that wouldn't you? Then nobody could disagree with you.

Here's an idea: Why don't I put my nephew and his three buddies, who are serving in Iraq with him, in touch with you. They spent weekends with me here in New York this summer and I am sure they would be more than happy to tell you exactly how they feel about Bush, Cheney and Rummy. AND the fact that they still don't have the body armor promised them THREE years ago.

From another responder:

Her: AMEN Mr. im10ashus! Amen!

I then decided to do a little research on said student. Turns out, he's not so chronically ill that he can't play soccer, or work on campus for Campus Crusade for Christ, or play in the marching band.

for a chronic condition that wouldn't prevent him from doing any of those things, to be fair. But there are 100 other things he could be doing to help.

But if he was going to use that as an excuse, he should have said exactly what it is that's preventing him from enlisting. If he has flat feet or one testicle, that's not chronic. But I get your point.

35. My apologies.
I hope I don't offend those that truly want to enlist but aren't able to for some real reason. I've served and I know what that service meant to me. But supporting our troops is one thing; demanding accountability from our leaders is another. I don't think he understood the difference.

I'd still love to know why a "chronic health condition" would allow someone to play soccer (which is grueling) and marching band (which is also grueling). I'd love to know if this student had actually consulted the military.. and been told he couldn't join up.

83. He's full of crap
The only way he could be disqualified for service is if he actually attempted to enlist and was given a full military physical at the Military Entrance Processing Station. Anyone who has served in the military, as I have, can tell you that. Had he actually done so he would have described it thusly, not simply said he'd been told by military doctors he didn't qualify. He may well have had a conversation with someone in the military wherein he described whatever trendy spoiled Yuppie brat ailment he has and was told it would disqualify him, but I assure you he made no earnest effort to join the military.

Calling a veteran a "chicken hawk". Frankly, I loved your response about getting your nephew and his buddies to talk to him. One other thing I would have responded would be this:

How in the world is wearing a COLOR supporting our troops? If you really support the troops, why aren't you calling up your local Guard unit and finding out if there are any Guard families that might need a little help during the holiday season because their loved one is in Iraq and not working in a better paying job? Maybe you should pull out some GREEN and donate to the local Guard fund to buy body armor (I have). Another thought-what have you done to help your local vets? Have you donated time, money, or even jigsaw puzzles to your local VA hospital? Have you even found out what your local VA hospital needs?

I have never served in the military, because I don't believe in war. But this doesn't mean that I haven't supported the military-and there's no reason why you can't, either.

Well this just shows the intelligence of a bush/cheney supporter.
I wish you could tell him that he should spend some time getting the real facts on the chrsitian myth and how it was all created after 300 A.D. starting with Constantine. They were such barbaric and ignorant people and even cannabalistic even after 300 A.D.
Tell him if he is so smart the least he could do is research the religion he believes in, starting with THE BIBLE FRAUD and THE CRUCIFIXION OF TRUTH by Tony Bushby.ALl of it proven from old vatican texts and history.
If he doesnt want to go and fight this war based on lies then let him at least see what he is defending ,hiding behind the writings of people who tortured and killed their own family as Constantine and many others of that time did

16. So, those health problems are kicking up again?
I have health problems, pretty nasty ones, too. So I sympathize with Mr. Red.

However, I actually got "counseled" by military recruiters -- politely told that the professional military was no place for a kid with a savagely mutilated ear, no sense of balance, inability to locate the direction of sounds, and chronic pain. Even with good grades, a "work ethic", and a desire to serve. Sometimes you can't cut it through no fault of your own. The effectiveness of the military and the fate of the United States are just too important to revolve around the weakenesses of any one of its members.

Rather than cry in my beer (though I didn't drink), I realized that political activism was a patriotic pursuit, and have often risked the criticism of my fellow progressives in support of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and women, and Marines. Then, I also risked the criticism of the idiot war-heads by criticizing the military decisions being made by the top brass, including the Great Primal Father of them all, Ronald Reagan.

This country has suffered under lethal fanatasies about war for long time; most people, even many of those in uniform, are clueless about the depth and range of depravity of those who pull the strings. "Old Gimlet Eye", General Smedley Butler, was constantly surprised by it, even when he broke up a cell of right-wing revolutionaries intent on launching a coup d'état against President Roosevelt.

I have no particular hatred for Mr. Red and those who think like him. I sympathize with his frustration, as wrong-headed and misguided as it is. One of these days, provided he doesn't bury his head in the sand and keeps his conscience alive, he will wake up to the realization that he's been played for a fool.

There are many ways of being played for a fool, but it is our own foolishness that causes us the most painful sense of shame.

I tried to enlist in the U.S. Army back in November, 2002, but was rejected because I was then taking Paxil (an antidepressant). I argued with the recruiter, but he said that it was a firm rule; I would have to get off the medication and then wait a full six months before I could reapply. But I was unable to stop taking the Paxil, and that was that (still taking an antidepressant, unfortunately). I have to say that I was pretty bummed for a few days afterward. My big chance to serve my country in uniform.

I had an exchange with a 20 year old hawk who was planning to hand out pro-war flyers at a protest and was soliciting ideas. I provided info on where to obtain Army recruiting brochures. He assured me that he was planning to join Marines. Several weeks later he posted that he had decided not to sign up. Maybe he learned something at the protest.

21. His suggestion, "Perhaps you should move to Canada"...
is a tacit admission that he knows he's just gotten his ass handed to him, imo. Once it gets to that point, he's probably run out of ammo and knows you won't let him get away with making such stupid assertions.

I don't know if he realized what he was doing when he typed his part:
You do not have to support the president to support our troops.
Fair enough, and I agree with that.
Calling George Bush a liar is not support.
He just said "(y)ou don't have to support the president to support our troops," and then he implies you're not supporting the troops by calling Bush a liar! Which is it?

He is not saying that "not calling Bush a liar is support for the troops"

Saying "Calling George Bush a liar is not support." is like saying "emptying your ashtray is not support"

This moran is fixated on wearing red (and why "red", pray tell: subtle hint of partisanship) as the only way to show support. Anything else is "not showing support".

university. I'm sure some branch of the U.S. military could find something for him/her to do. This person is healthy enough to attend classes, surely the military could use him/her in some capacity, I imagine.

"I then decided to do a little research on said student. Turns out, he's not so chronically ill that he can't play soccer, or work on campus for Campus Crusade for Christ, or play in the marching band."

He doesn't need to go to Canada, does he? Just don't volunteer. You are right to call him a chicken-hawk.

45. I realize he told you to go to Canada...
but, to get out of serving in this war, he doesn't have to "evade a draft" by going to Canada, just not volunteer, and then to save face claim "chronic medical condition." If a "chronic medical condition" keeps him out of the military, it seems it would keep him off the soccer field, too. I mean, unless he's the goalie, there's not many other sports that requires more physical fitness to play.

57. There's lots of work to be done in Iraq besides active-duty military
Hell, I remember a job ad posted to monster.com, IIRC, for KB&R position in Iraq, where they were wanting someone to help with organizing and setting up recreation resources for the soldiers. "Will deploy with laptop and body armor" stands out in my memory from the listing. Now THAT would be supporting the troops.

There's work to be had as a truck driver, if nothing else. As another poster mentions, at the very least he could go as a missionary.

I doubt his "chronic health problems" are so severe that he couldn't do something like that.

Whenever someone tells me, "Don't like it? Move to Canada!" I usually respond by saying, "That's for quitters. I think I'll stay right here and clean up the mess your powerful friends are making."

I would agree with you but I have a professor now who used to work for Mitch Daniels who's driving me insane. He keeps lauding Bush and Mitch. The only go around we've had so far is when he said something negative about a Democrat I've volunteered for. He asked if anyone had worked in politics right before I walked into class. Since I walked in during the middle I chose not to answer. I think he was prepping to see if anyone would question him.

If we are going to send our men and women to war, let's at LEAST provide them with the necessary tools and armor for protection. Never even mind that the reason they are there in the first place is dubious at best; perhaps even criminal.

107. There's no use in moving to Canada.
If the Bush regime is not stopped soon, in ten years they'll be invading
Canada on a flimsy pretext in order to shut down its free press and
seize its oil and mineral reserves.

If oil sands are counted as oil reserves, Canada has the second most
extensive oil reserves (after Saudi Arabia) on the planet. Apparently
the Chinese consider the oil sands important--they're considering a $1
billion investment in a pipeline to bring the oil to the sea.
