What research has been done in regards to "wellfare queens" and people
getting rich off of welfare? Personally, I believe the statistics are otherwise, but I was wondering if anyone had any links to sites that had researched this issue, and knew what sort of conclusion they came to.

1. I can't imagine a single mom with a bunch of kids getting 'rich' off of
US welfare.

Now if you want to discuss 'Corporate Welfare'....well, that's where the money is!

2. you don't even need to research it, it's bullshit

they don't give out enough money to get rich off of. People who get welfare are lucky to survive. They can barely get by. It's just a story that Reagan started telling to scare people away from supporting any government programs. A person can get enough money to get by, but that's about it. Welfare isn't designed to be a support program. It's designed to just keep people afloat until they can get going themselves. If a person just chooses to live off of welfare forever, then they don't get to have much of a life. It's not like they get to take long vacations to different places and buy new cars etc. I have known people on welfare. People with several kids too. They just manage to put some food on the table and get by. That's about it.

5. Not only that, but if they make a few bucks and report
it, more than that is deducted from their check.

3. I've never seen any research supporting the notion
of anyone getting rich off of welfare.

It just caught on as a talking point, and it played well to struggling working class people.

4. I know that there is no real research supporting the existence of "welfare
queens," but when talking points take on as much of a life of their own as that one did, i think it is necessary to rebut it with definite research.

9. Good point. But you'll probably find more research on welfare=poverty.

6. That was a bullshit claim thrown around by Ronnie.

It helped to create the hatred of the lower class and made it ok to think of them as disposable people. It's class envy in reverse.

8. It sounds like an interesting piece to read.
I'll be sure to look for a copy of it at my library sometime soon.

10. And also consider asking them to prove their assertions.
Make them name names, give cities where this is occurring, etc. and they have to cite REPUTABLE sources, not republican propaganda. If they're making the assertion, they have to prove it. It's not your burden to disprove it.
