Extension of Patriot Act Faces Threat of Filibuster/Go Feingold
A tentative deal to extend the government's antiterrorism powers under the law known as the USA Patriot Act appeared in some jeopardy Thursday, as Senate Democrats threatened to mount a filibuster in an effort to block the legislation.

"This is worth the fight," Senator Russell D. Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat who serves on the Judiciary Committee, said in an interview.

"I've cleared my schedule right up to Thanksgiving," Mr. Feingold said, adding that he was making plans to read aloud from the Bill of Rights as part of a filibuster if necessary.

The political maneuvering came even before negotiators for the House and Senate had agreed on a final deal to extend the government's counterterrorism powers under the act.

17. Not necessarily...
fillibustering just takes advantage of the fact that the senate has unlimited debate. If he can keep talking so long that the other side gives up, then he has successfully filibustered. Of course, most likely, he will have several people in line to do the same thing during their debate time.

21. It takes a lot more than one senator to prevent a cloture vote.
That _will_ shut down a filibuster.

18. What a excellent idea
Why just yesterday, when i called Senator Patty Murray's office, I suggested they should use the filibuster for this very thing. The aide I spoke to almost choked. Well, he made a funny noise in his throat.

This must have already been floated by the Dems. And I know they got lots of phone calls about it yesterday.

19. He should just request that they read aloud every word of the Damn...
...thing, that would probably take a week, and would give anyone who tuned in the opportunity to hear what it contains. Might be good, seeing how almost nobody has ever actually read the thing.
