CIA Director Stansfield Turner calls Bush liar, Cheney "VP for torture"
Admiral Stansfield Turner has joined the chorus condemning the policies of the Bush administration. It seems that many have been sickened by the immoral and un-American policies, but are only now saying so publicly.

There are bound to be more to come.

HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.itv.com/news/index_1447362.html

A former CIA director has exclusively told ITV News that torture is condoned and even approved by the Bush government.

The devastating accusations have been made by Admiral Stansfield Turner who labelled Dick Cheney "a vice president for torture".

>snip<

The American Senate says torture should be banned - whatever the justification. But President Bush has threatened to veto their ruling.

The former spymaster claims President Bush is not telling the truth when he says that torture is not a method used by the US.

Speaking of Bush's claims that the US does not use torture, Admiral Turner, who ran the CIA from 1977 to 1981, said: "I do not believe him".

On Dick Cheney he said "I'm embarrassed the United States has a vice president for torture.

"He condones torture, what else is he?".

Admiral Turner claims the secret CIA prisons used for torture are known as 'black sites', terror suspects are picked up in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan.

They are flown by CIA-controlled private aircraft to countries where there are secret interrogation centres, operating outside any country's jurisdiction.

>snip<

He said torturing to get information was immoral, was not effective and encouraged potential enemies to do the same to Americans.

6. Turner carries no weight
JC picking him to head the CIA was one of the worst self-inflicted blows to the Democrats in recent history. He was absolutely HATED by everyone in intelligence-- the bad spooks and the good. He contributed to turning a lot of the "good" CIA people against us and paved the way for GHWB. Whenever he speaks he diminishes us in the eyes of the people we want to win over.

Note: this information is hearsay and comes from people I know who served in Naval Intelligence in the 60s and 70s.

13. TandP: Yours is a very interesting post--I wish you'd say more
about exactly what Stansfield Turner stands accused of doing or not doing.

The broad brush opinions of him you heard also have been said about his boss Jimmy Carter and particularly about JC's Attorney General, Ramsay Clark.

IMO people like Turner Carter and Clark may be like "Martians" to many people whose idea of a great politician is Ronald Reagan. Carter and his appointees are on the other side of an era of political illusion that began under Reagan, with big media "infotainment" taking the place of real news, and big-time PR flacks calling the shots at the White House. To me, Carter's men represent the last REAL Democrats, men and women whom the corporations could not buy, and the Gergens and Fleischers could not sell like fancy make-up.

If we want to bring Reagan's "revolt of the haves" finally to an end, we've got to get more familiar with what real Democrats were like, and learn just how corporate Republicans succeeded in ruining their reputations for a generation.

14. I wish I knew more!
As I posted, its just hearsay. But I've heard it from guys who are pretty straight up, conservative Dems and Republicans. They just get all apoplectic at the sight of him and mutter something about how incompetent he was as an Admiral dealing with Naval Intelligence. I can never pry any details out of them.

I showed them the DVD that came out last year "Revealed:" something or other. They were totally fascinated by it until the end when Turner came on briefly. They didn't say anything but their demeanor physically changed when they saw him. It didn't make them dismiss everything else they saw, but I cringed because I know how they feel about him. These guys absolutely HATE Rummy and Cheney with a passion!

These guys are retired now but I think people like them who are still working are acting behind the scenes to bring down this treasonous cabal. I agree with you: I wish I could get into their heads because I think Dems are a lot better on national security and I can't understand why people in the know might think otherwise.

No one will confirm their locations, but there are several possibilities: The Mihail-Kogalniceanu military airbase in Romania is believed by many to be one such facility.

15. Admiral Turner was interviewed on the news radio this morning
He makes a point that might sway some people who are unimpressed by the immorality and illegality of torture...that by engaging in torture itself, the U.S. government basically opens the door for our U.S. servicemen (and women) to be tortured by enemy captors. If we do not adhere to the various international agreements forbidding torture, including the Geneva Conventions among others, how can we demand that other nations follow them?

Maybe this will make some kind of impression on those who don't care about anyone besides Americans.
