Cops: Texas man hid air freshener cam in women's bathroom
NOVEMBER 17--Meet Danny Edward Doyen. Good news: The Texas school superintendent was arrested yesterday, but it wasn't for sleeping with a student. Bad news: Doyen allegedly placed a digital video camera--concealed inside what appeared to be an air freshener--in a women's bathroom. According to a criminal complaint, a copy of which you'll find here, Doyen, 46, admitted placing the hidden camera in the ladies loo in a bid to "obtain nude photos of female employees" of the Bruceville-Eddy Independent School District. Doyen, a married father of four has headed the district, located near Waco, since 2002. Doyen, who purchased the $299 camera with a district credit card, was charged with a felony for the secret recording and jailed in lieu of a court hearing today. He is pictured below in a McLennan County Sheriff's Office booking photo. Doyen's downfall was precipitated by a suspicious district clerk who flagged his submission of an invoice for a surveillance camera. After a bit of online sleuthing, the clerk determined the exact nature of the item and, according to investigators, recalled that Doyen had previously mentioned that the district office could use air fresheners in the men's bathroom and a hallway. The clerk found the hidden camera in the women's bathroom, where it was sitting on a shelf pointed at the toilet three feet away. The surveillance device was later found in Doyen's office when probers executed a search warrant. (3 pages)

I think that one of the more enduring problems with politics in America is that the most dedicated partisans tend to think that the other side is morally faulty. The truth (always more complex) is that there are good people and bastards in every possible walk of life, every race, gender, and socioeconomic class, and every political party. This fact alone makes racism, sexism, classism, and bigotry of any stripe utterly useless. Prejudice can be rational to a point, but hatred of the Other, based upon otherness, is asinine. Stepping off the soap-box now...

20. Well, actually there seems to be some correlation here

it's becoming clearer (see other DU threads, e.g., and other social research) that there is a correlation between secret crimnial sexual behavior and repressive religious beliefs, i.e. fundiefascists. This correlation exists for two basic reasons: 1) deliberately cloaking the private behavior with pronounced public piety; and 2) feelings of extreme shame associated with the uncontrollable "perverted" behavior leading to support of causes advocating severe punishment and control over same behavior.

One classic recent example of the correlation phenomenon is Jim West, Spokane, WA mayor. He was a closeted homosexual who hated "out" homosexuals and vocally supported and pushed anti-gay discrimination legislation. He trolled gay chat rooms for sex hookups with young men. And he also offered these young gay men jobs as his "aides."

The Board of Trustees of the Bruceville-Eddy Independent School District met in an emergency
meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16th and voted 7-0 to put superintendent Dan Doyen
on administrative leave pending the investigation of charges against him or until such time as the board
otherwise directs. Under the direction of Dr. Vonn Murray, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, all
facilities were checked for inappropriate recording or video devices and none were found. It was
determined this was an isolated incident that occurred in the administration building only. The board
deeply regrets this occurrence and wants to assure the community that all steps will be taken to assure
the safety and well being of all students, employees, and visitors. The board also appointed Gary
Herbert, Intermediate School Principal, as acting superintendent.
