DOJ Push For Voting Rights Agreement Puzzles Officials
Fort Bend County officials profess puzzlement over Justice Department insistence that they take steps aimed at increasing participation in elections by Spanish-speaking citizens.

A former county Democratic Party official says, however, that there’s no puzzle – just reluctance on the part of Republicans to embrace a group of voters who don’t support their candidates.

“We’re not aware, we have no evidence, there’s been no statement by the Justice Department that we’re in violation of any federal election rule,” County Judge Robert Hebert said Wednesday. “There’s merely a request that we voluntarily do something to avoid litigation. And the issue we’re trying to clarify is, how can it be voluntary if you do it to avoid litigation? If we’re in violation of a rule, then that needs to be explained to us, and we’ll make it right.”
