US military completes probe of burning Taliban bodies

KABUL: A US military inquiry into television footage purportedly showing American troops burning the bodies of two dead Taliban fighters has been completed and will be released soon, a US spokesman said on Monday. Cremation of corpses is banned under Islam, and the Afghan government demanded that those responsible be punished. Islamic clerics condemned the act.

The US military launched an inquiry into the alleged desecration, which was recorded on video last month by a freelance journalist embedded with the US troops in volatile southern Afghanistan.
