The possessive pronoun "its" does NOT have an apostrophe! None of the possessive pronouns do -- its, his, hers, ours, theirs, yours...

Sorry about correcting your grammar, but I'm a copy editor for a newspaper and this is one of my pet peeves. It's like fingernails screeching across chalkboard to me.

3. My inner English major says: "it's" is short for "it is"
If "it is" doesn't work as a substitute, then "its" is written without apostrophe.
