Pincus: Woodward 'Asked Me to Keep Him Out' of Plame Reporting
Pincus: Woodward 'Asked Me to Keep Him Out' of Plame Reporting

By Joe Strupp

Published: November 16, 2005 12:45 PM ET

NEW YORK Walter Pincus, the longtime Washington Post reporter and one of several journalists who testified in the Valerie Plame case, said he believed as far back as 2003 that Bob Woodward had some involvement in the case but he did not pursue the information because Woodward asked him not to.

"He asked me to keep him out of the reporting and I agreed to do that," Pincus said today. His comments followed a Post story today about Woodward's testimony on Monday before special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, in which Woodward reportedly disclosed that a senior White House official told him about Plame's identity as a CIA operative a month before her identity was disclosed publicly.

1. So the reporters are covering for each other's involvement
with the outing of someone in the CIA.

Great.

3. When Pincus seen Woodward on Larry King downplaying the Libby indictment..
...he should have said something. Even if it cost him his job. Anything less is cowardly.

4. I remember reading (here I believe) that Woodward had ties to CIA
which is why he was picked to deliver Nixon. I can't recall more about this, anyone else?

5. Woodward served in
naval intelligence. He was connected to the White House, and if he is to be believed -- and he rarely is -- this is when his "friendship" with Mark Felt began. It is worth noting that Felt was an old navy intell man himself, before going on to the FBI.

One of the things I recently asked Octafish about is what, if any, connection that Mark Felt had to Admiral Harry Felt, the head of the US military in SE Asia in the late '50s and early '60s.

Woodward's connections are likely to be from the ONI rather than CIA.

6. thanks H2O man. I wouldn't be surprised if there were deeper connections
than just journalist. Does ONI have ties to BFEE?
