Here is a story that someone at work told me. Now I went to school and now work with a lovely girl who happens to be from a family of fundies. Now she has never pushed her religion, and we are nurses so questions of morality vis a vis treatment courses has never come up so I don't want anyone attacking her, I love the girl and she is a good nurse. So anyway she was telling us a story about her 16 year old brother. When he goes to bed at night he HANDCUFFS himself to the bed post at night. The reason? So he wont touch himself improperly at night while he was asleep. They were taught that masturbation is improper and immoral as well as unhealthy as many religions do, but this is going a little to far don't you think? It is just my opinion that I think that it is unhealthy for a 16 year old not to masturbate, and as a male who was 16 at one time, I don't know why he would think that he would jerk off at night. I say believe what you want, but this is just crazy. My friend who is a little more with it, I mean she lived with a guy until her parents told her to move home, was even a little concerned about it. When I heard it I just knew that I had to share it with my friends here at the DU.

I don't think I'll ever be right. :shrug: I've been to counseling, but I just can't break through the barrier that was placed in my mind by a fundy upbringing. Being molested by a member of the church certainly didn't help, either.

Speaking only for myself, I LOATHE fundamentalism. I don't trust fundamentalists, period. I gave them chance after chance in my life and every single one I've known has proven to be untrustworthy. I am not inclined to give fundies another chance. They're backstabbers. Their religion demands it. I know this because I used to be a fundy and fundies can never just be friends with an unbeliever. There is always an ulterior motive: conversion.

It's just like the Sara Lee double chocolate cake that you put under lock and key. You can always unlock it. He can always unlock those handcuffs if he wants to badly enough. Certainly he isn't locking them and then giving the key to someone else. He has to be able to get up and go to the bathroom too now and then, so I don't get how this works. Maybe it just stops him long enough for him to fall asleep, and that's how it prevents him from masturbating.

Aside from that, I don't think it is healthy. Masturbation is a bore after a while, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't serve a function until then. It can't be good going around all sexually frustrated all of the time, and you have to wonder about psychic trauma acquired from overt restraint.

This is a youth with definite bondage fantasies-my experience is that the vast majority of people who have those type of fantasies are people who have intense sexual desires, but can't accept responsibility for them, so they have the bondage thing to mentally relieve them of that responsibility. This kind of thinking comes from a lot of things, but not religion alone. I'm not necessarily saying his family abused him, but sometimes bad things happen in communities.

The religious beliefs about masturbation are not helpful in this situation, but I don't think they are the underlying problem in this case. A complication, perhaps. The problem is that this kid thinks that sex is evil and that he is evil because his body has natural sexual responses. Yeah, some fundamentalists preach this very thing, but for the kid to think up this solution to his "problem" is indicative of something else going on.

I'm basing this on an 18 year social work career working with foster kids and delinquents.

I never understood why people put themselves through this agony. Sex isn't a sin unless it's sexual assault on a victim. If those fundies only knew how depraved many of the fundie preachers are about sex, they would be shocked.
