85. That's true for a lot of them, I think -
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 09:06 AM by neebob
especially those who belong to certain churches. The one I was forced to attend as a child teaches that Satan is working overtime to keep people from believing it, hardening their hearts and stuff, so I got the idea that fighting against it proves it's true. The more people are doing it, the truer it must be. I applied that principle, subconsciously, to a lot of things that seemed sort of right somehow and yet glaringly wrong at the same time. And I continued to do it for decades after I blew off this church, until I was nearly ruined by a sociopathic con man who spewed a lot of B.S. about right and wrong and stuff that sounded like what I'd been taught as a child and realized I was still doing it.

It isn't even about the religious teachings, necessarily. Spewing B.S. that agrees with what your parents taught you is powerfully persuasive, especially if they also failed to model critical thinking.

Religion aside, Bush spews all kinds of crap that agrees with wingnutty stuff that most American kids were led to believe until about, oh, 1975 - and still are to some degree. My mom sucks it up like Hoover, and so did my dad. Even my brother, who hates the church we belonged to with a purple passion, seems to need to justify his dislike of Bush.

Ironically, our parents also taught us about words and actions. Unfortunately, that only applies to "bad" people who don't say certain things.

57. No, only about 2500 are in common use in modern Japanese
That seems like a lot, but in actual practice, once you've learned five hundred or so AND have a good command of the spoken language, the rest come easily.

(Nobody believes this assertion unless they've actually studied Japanese long enough.)

Even modern Chinese uses only about 5,000 characters for non-specialized reading material.

67. I wonder how that bit of misinformation got into my skull.
(Scrubbing. Erasing.) Yep. It seems high school students have learned 1,800 or so on sight by the time they graduate, and another 2,000 is regarded as 'highly educated.' Understanding the primitives seems to be the key to expanded kanji literacy. (I remember my amazement, as a child of a culture with a phonetic alphabet, in learning that multiple national cultures have a somewhat common written language but widely varying spoken languages. Fish will be the last to discover water.)

78. The 1800+ kanji that students are supposed to know
before graduating high school are called "kan-yo kanji". Nearly all of them are composed of "radicals" which show the basic meaning of the character. It takes a while to get used to them, but if you've got motivation to study the language, they can be mastered. :hi:

56. Japan has been in the fight for the Iraqi people since the Gulf War --
When contamination as a result of depleted uranium was discovered - increases in rates of cancer and horrific birth defects.

Japan suffered unspeakably, for generations after the nuclear bombs were dropped. They feel very connected to the Iraqi people who are suffering radiation sickness and death as a result of US action.

Save the War Children is a moving photo exhibit of the devastation caused by DU - by Takashi Morizumi.

Morizumi's Photos - Photos at the top of the page show damage to buildings, children with leukemia, and mothers and babies, the final two photos are graphic -

2nd to last photo: Newborn who has wasted away to literal skin and bones, mouth purple due to lack of circulation.

Final photo: Baby born with anencephaly (no brain). His shocked mother disappeared from the hospital.

Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 04:37 PM by TimeChaser
Katakana and Hiragana, which are alphabets. Katakana is used on foreign words or names while Hiragana is used for native words. Kanji are Chinese characters that have been adopted into the Japanese language. For Kanji, instead of a character representing a sound, it represents a whole word or idea.

and for native Japanese words that don't have a kanji assigned to them.

That's a bit of an oversimplification, but it works most of the time.

There's also Romaji, which is writing Japanese using the Roman alphabet used in the West. There are two uses for this: if you are stuck using an ancient computer that doesn't have a Japanese font, you can use Romaji; and if you're a gaijin who knows Japanese but either can't or won't learn kanji, you can still read and write Japanese.

44. Translations of signs:
1. Bush go home

2. The sign at the left is directed at the Japanese "Self-Defense Force": "Don't participate in occupation and abuse. Withdraw."

The partially visible sign on the right says,"Don't kill children."

3. Bush is a murderer!

4. Sign in the back: Opposed to the U.S.-Japan Summit Conference for war and expansion of military bases.

The kanji that I can read on the banner say, "Opposed to the construction of bases."

77. Take another look at #2, Lydia
I believe it's "gaykusatsu" instead of "gyakutai", which would make it "massacre" instead of "abuse"

47. The 2nd photo says "Million Killer" in English - what does Japan know
that we don't? Are they counting future deaths predicted from exposure to depleted uranium and other toxins * is dumping in Iraq? Are they counting the deaths during the Gulf War (relatively few, though gruesome) and during Economic Sanctions -- UNICEF estimate of deaths of children under age 5 was about 500,000... The deaths during Gulf War are GHWB's and the majority of deaths (during economic sanctions) were Bill Clinton's responsibility.

Finally - does any know whether there were International Protests against the Vietnam War. When Nixon traveled abroad was he met by hoards who despised him?

 :grr:  :grr:  :grr:

59. Yes, there were international protests against the Vietnam War
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 07:50 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
A group of European intellectuals even held a mock war crimes trial of the U.S. in Sweden.
However, I don't recall any U.S. presidents being met with demonstrations, because Kennedy was very popular overseas, and Johnson did all his foreign travel early in his term before Vietnam was a major issue.

However, when he was Eisenhower's vice-president, Nixon was met by demonstrators in Latin America and people threw stones at the car he was riding in in Venezuela.

64. Wow - Maybe Johnson avoided foreign travel to avoid the sort of
reception * is getting. Maybe that was wise of Johnson. I am, however, very glad that clueless George keeps traveling. I appreciate the 'help' of the Latin Americans and Japanese and UK'ers... It is just so embarrassing having * representing the US -

62. When I visited in the fall of 2004, everyone wanted to know whether
I was a Republican or a Democrat. When I said that I was a Democrat, they kind of relaxed and smiled approvingly.

I've been visiting Japan since 1977, and nothing like that had ever happened before.

61. Seems very un-Japanese...
I would never have guessed people would speak like that here, a land where formality and restraint is the norm. However, there may be some people here who share my convictions! WHOA!
Hard to see Japanese government change course on this front however. The LDP, led by the Pro-Bush Koizumi, were re-elected in a landslide. However, that election was fought on different issues.

68. "a land where formaltiy and restraint are the norm" SOMETIMES
Japan had huge anti-American and anti-government demonstrations in the 1960s.

Koizumi manages to stay in power as the head of the LDP because the opposition parties either come off as sweet but clueless (Socialists, Communists), a bit scary (Komeito), or are merely cults of personality built around a discontented former LDP member (New Liberal Club, Democratic Party of Japan). However, the Communists have governed a number of cities and prefectures over the years and have done a good job.
