Walter Winchell, who was essentially a gossip columnist from the 1930s through 1950s. He tried to hitch his cart to McCarthy's star and became quite rabidly conservative, and except for narrating the Untouchables TV series, he faded to nothingness when McCarthy lost prestige to the point that only his daughter showed up for his funeral.

The only movie portrayal of him I've seen was in "The Josephine Baker Story," with Craig T. Nelson as Walter. Nelson could play the part of O'Reilly after being splotched up some.
