Three Cheers For China! China may save the world from pandemic.
Face it folks, with George Bush in charge of Bird Flu we are all gonna die. Well, at least a whole bunch of poor people are gonna die.

Do you really trust George W. Bush, the most corrupt and incompetant president in the history of the United Stated to do ANYTHING RIGHT? Of course you don't. Now that the H5N1 strain of Bird Flu is one simple genetic change away from the 1918, what is needed is ACTION. and quick!!

China, a totalitarian government where the whole outwieghs the few is just the kind of government that is needed to deal with this pandemic. Consider the following actions that have already been taken.

1) China is breaking the Tamiflu patent. Fuck you Roche, Fuck you Rumsfelt. Once you get killer flu, Tamiflu is the only thing that will save you. Does it make you happy that the US has only enough for 2 percent of our population? Does it make you jealous that Europe has enough for 25% of their population. How about the fact that the price has gone up from 60 dollars to 120 dollars in the last 30 days? Well you will be happy to know China will be cranking out generics of this drug.

2) China is making billion of Bird Flu vaccine and is vaccinating ALL OF ITS CHICKENS! um why aren't we working on that? The virus has a chance of mutating in each host that gets it. The problem with having 100's of BILLIONS of birds getting this disease is that it makes the mutation into the 1918 flu INEVITABLE. Its not a question of IF. Its a question of WHEN.

3) China's control of its population is WAY better than anything in the west. China's has a command economy. China will be the one who developes the vaccine for the 1918 flu. AND SAVE THE WORLD.

Bush is doing nothing because he is at best INCOMPETANT. At worst he wants to kill all the poor people.

China Says It Will Vaccinate Its Entire Poultry Population

By KEITH BRADSHER and ELISABETH ROSENTHAL
Published: November 15, 2005
BEIJING, Nov. 15 - China's Agriculture Ministry said late today that it would vaccinate all of the nation's billions of chickens and other poultry against bird flu.

The campaign, disclosed by the official Xinhua News Agency, would be the largest single vaccination effort ever for any species in terms of the number of animals involved, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. It will also be logistically complicated; billions of free-range birds will have to be caught.

Dr. Qi Xiaoqiu, the director general of the department for disease prevention and control at China's Health Ministry, said at a conference today that three-fifths of the poultry in China were kept by families, who let the birds and other domesticated animals wander around the neighborhood and the yard and often through the house. Constant close contact between animals and people is worrisome because birds and pigs can carry the H5N1 bird flu virus and may transmit it to people.

20. vaccinating chickens and flu mutation
Since the flu mutates wouldn't vaccinating the chicken population eventually create a flu mutation that is resiliant to the vacination?
I don't know the answer to this, but I'm curious.

19. They were able to contain SARS
so they should be able to contain avian flu.

In regards to humans, if they immunize all the people who have close contact with birds and poultry, there shouldn't ever be a big problem.

22. You could contain SARS
because you could tell right off when you were infected. Flu is spread easier and you are contagious before you have symptoms. So much harder to contain. Not doable

23. They contained SARS
by killing off all the infected birds. That is what they are doing here with bird flu. SARS was transmittable from human to human. So far bird flu hasn't done that since the 1918 pandemic and it still hasn't been proved conclusively that that strain even came from birds.

12. Viet Nam is vaccinating chickens as well
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 02:27 PM by formercia
It's a good idea but there needs to be some changes in the way livestock is raised. The environment in which the birds are raised contributes to the problem.

Brazil breaks patents, has reduced population growth muchly, has received awards in AIDS treatment and prevention --

and is not a jackbooted dictatorship bent on pleasing big corporations with slave labor. Take that.
