Take your hate out of our stateTo the editor:
The MinuteMAN (their spelling, to avoid being confused with the '80s punk band) claim they are only interested in secure borders, not in racism and hatred, but consider this:
* The MinuteMAN's token Hispanic/president of the Texas chapter, Al Garza, has said his organization DOES screen its applicants, asking them whether they are skinheads, KKK, Nazis, etc. But he did NOT say the MinuteMAN turn down those who answer "Yes."
* There are pictures of MinuteMAN that include individuals holding Confederate (pro-slavery) and Nazi flags.
* Newspaper articles from the Boston Globe and Washington Post show that the token MinuteMAN who showed up at the northern border were hooted out of town with the slogan,
"Take your hate out of our state." (By the way, those MinuteMAN bozos got lost in the woods up there and even wandered across the border, becoming illegal aliens themselves.)
* Organizations that are known to oppose the Minutemen's presence have received death and other threats.
* The MinuteMAN vehicles carry Bush-Cheney bumper stickers, despite Bush's having disavowed them as unnecessary, and this has prompted MinuteMAN threats against Bush as well.
My heart goes out to the United Farm Workers' union, which has chosen to express the outrage most Hispanics and other good Americans feel at the presence of the MinuteMAN in Texas by holding fasts and vigils and countering hatred with love, which is their guiding philosophy as set forth by Cesar Chavez.
But the good people of Vermont who threw the Minutemen out on their bums also have it right:
MinuteMAN, take your hate out of our state.I support the UFW and others in demanding that elected officials pass resolutions to that effect.
