UN Report : 30,000 Iraqi Civilians Killed Since War Began
Fresh report paints dark picture of Iraq

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- As many as 30,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed since the war began, according to a new report from the United Nations.

A total of 74 journalists and media workers have also been reported killed since the U.S.-led invasion, five between September and October alone, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq which issued its latest report Monday.

While the Bush administration claims progress in the war in Iraq, the U.N. office paints a different picture, highlighting civilian deaths from terrorist attacks, allegations of civil rights violations by Iraqi security forces, and the looming possibility of civil war.

"The price paid by civilians, including women and children, during military activity currently underway calls for further reflection on the nature and conduct of the conflict and on the proportionality of the use of force," the report states.

2. Now this gets me thinking
and I'm not a real deep thinker, but, if Bush really believes he's a Christian, and I think he really does believe that, and given the whole Christian doctrine about heaven and hell and the afterlife, shouldn't he be less concerned about whether two gays are allowed to be married and more concerned by the idea that he, himself, will be going to hell for being ultimately responsible for the deaths of 30,000 innocent people?

3. like all good bushbots I'm sure he himself believes all of the civilian
deaths have been caused by the insurgents and if they are from our own "collateral damage" that's insurgents' fault too because if they weren't killing people we would have to bomb them

4. Interesting. A former interrogator on
Democracy Now just claimed he estimates about 10,000 died in Fallujah alone. I don't buy these numbers.

5. rationalization
Bush considers the 30,000 Iraqi civilian deaths as nothing more than the demise of a lot of frogs that can talk.

6. That is just not possible...
Unless they mean since January 2005 which they don't.

I will believe this report from the Lancet over any other so far...

Iraq death toll 'soared post-war'
Friday, 29 October 2004

Iraqis are now 58 times more likely to die a violent death, Lancet
Poor planning, air strikes by coalition forces and a "climate of violence" have led to more than 100,000 extra deaths in Iraq, scientists claim.

A study published by the Lancet says the risk of death by violence for civilians in Iraq is now 58 times higher than before the US-led invasion.

Unofficial estimates of civilian deaths had varied from 10,000 to over 37,000.

The Lancet admits the research is based on a small sample - under 1,000 homes - but says the findings are "convincing".
