Sauerkraut may cure Bird Flu.
"Scientists in Seoul believe the German cabbage contains a bacteria that fights the disease.

Researchers fed 11 out of 13 chickens infected with avian flu with fermented cabbage - the chickens showed signs of recovery within a week."

Rummy will be so disappointed if this works.

31. It IS kim chee. The press release is incomplete.
Think about it. Why would the Koreans be testing sauerkraut? Their own version of fermented cabbage is kim chee.

A deeply, deeply sceptical Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Fermented cabbage (kimchi) is the national dish in SK, as previous posters have pointed out.

6. Nursing mothers have used cabbage transdermally to help with
engorgement of the breasts for ages now. There seems to be some scientific evidence to support this.

I keep wonder who did what in order to discover this in the first place.

22. Hadn't heard that but my guess is that the way these things catch crumbs
when we eat that it wasn't hard to figure out about the cabbage. *lol*

10. I asked my girlfriend, an EMT, what she thought about this
She said it's probably the vinegar that helps kill the bacteria. We use vinegar to clean the outdoor bird feeders in the spring and fall. Can't use detergents because they can kill the birds, but vinegar is a natural cleaner.

16. I hate sauerkraut with a violent passion!
I'm not sure whether dying from the bird flu would be worse than wishing I were dead because I have to eat sauerkraut all winter long.

Just the thought of eating one bite of sauerkraut makes me want to hurl.

18. At the turn of the last century, there was a virus that was killing
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 12:01 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
chickens in our country. A doctor (the great uncle of a friend of mine) discovered that black tea killed that virus, and the epidemic ended. He told me this as I was suffering from a mouth herpes infection (viral) and drinking black tea (which includes black, orange pekoe and oolang) cleared the infection immediately. Now anytime I have a virus coming on, or being exposed to the flu (my kids have brought it home a few times from school), I ward them off by drinking several cups of black tea.

At least, that's the research article that I saw. Kim chee is also fermented cabbage.

25. Yes, it's possible, I found this...
Kimchi Effective in Fighting Bird Flu

``A veterinarian at an Indonesian zoo asked us to send our animal feed additive, which contains the bacteria leuconostoc citreum, a type of lactobacillus found in kimchi,’’ said Lee Jong-Dae, president of Celltech International.

``We are sure that the additive will work in treating fowls with the avian influenza as our tests have shown that local chickens that were fed the additive had a much stronger immune system against a wide array of viruses compared to ones that it was not given to,’’ he said.

30. My dad tricked his greedy dog with sauerkraut.
He had one dog that was so greedy and aggressive that it would run to the food dish and scarf up all the food in one mouthful to keep the other dog from getting any. One day Dad filled the dish with sauerkraut and called the dogs. The greedy dog gulped up a huge mouthful, got the most shocked look and started spitting it out. Dad almost hurt himself laughing.
