No shopping at Wal-Mart for me; I usually go to the mall. I don't think that's much better, but it's not Wal-Mart, and that's usually good enough.

34. i know......
i've started to put my money (literally) where my mouth is. once i found out my favorite local restaurant donated thousands to bush's reelection campaign & the RNC, haven't spent a dime there since. and when i read that RJ Reynolds provided a private jet for Tom Delay to travel to his arraignment in texas, i gave up Salem's. I'm sure this doesn't make a real big difference to their bottom lines, but I feel good about it.

The nature of Wal-Mart's "business model" is that for a lot of people in rural areas, the options they once had have all been driven out of business.

40. I saw a sad report today...
it said that 80% of what WM sells comes from China and that they are one of the biggest supporters of China imports. Does anyone else remember Sam Walton's commitment to buying US-made products whenever possible?

Another thing that seems so hypocritical - RWs actually take offense when I say that I'm trying not to shop at WM - I'm afraid of the day when they are our only choice. But, with them being so tied with China, wouldn't that make the RW $$$ spent there used -not only for abortions, but *forced* abortions. And, yet, most of the same ones seem to think that abortion is the only moral issue to vote on here.

50. I wonder about that now
Did he mean American made, or Mariana made? With those same Chinese workers with the forced abortions. I don't know why this hasn't been made a bigger issue either. The conditions our corporations have supported over the years have been appalling. Why do they hate us? Maybe things like the Bangladesh factory collapse that was on the news for 2 seconds before we got back to MWG.

Accused me of being a bad American, a traitor who supports al-Qaida, etc. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah....

I said, "you know, you're right. I am a bad American. I shop almost exclusively at Wal*Mart where I can get all kinds of cheap plastic crap made in Red China. Not only that, I buy Japanese cars, and look for the ones that were actually made in Japan."

I let the :sarcasm: drip all over the place, and I don't think I ever got a reply to that one, either.

42. No.
Have been inside the doors of a walmart exactly twice, once there and once here.

The goods are second rate, the service is about what you'd expect for the kind of things they do to their staff, the merchandise was dusty and the floors needed sweeping......and they weren't all that inexpensive in either place.

I would rather support the Hudson's Bay Company and smaller retailers like Cotton Ginny than spend what little I do have on stuff that will NOT last.......call me cheap.

56. Confession: in past years I had to shop Wal-Mart.
For at least a few items. My nephews and nieces live in a little Illinois town where the only national chain store is a Wal-Mart. I didn't want to give cash, and I didn't want to buy something that would probably never fit their tastes (since I don't think even they know what their tastes are) so I bought them Wal-Mart gift cards.

Well, this year, they're all adults, and my family has agreed that adults won't "gift" each other. So I will send them a card - made myself, not from Wal-Mart - and that's it.

I also don't care to receive anything from Wal-Mart, but I wasn't raised to look at a gift askance, so there wouldn't be any slappin'.

Just some returnin'.

But it's no worry--our extended family doesn't do gifts and my close friends know I hate Wal-Mart with a passion.

74. Using all that oil to get to Costco..
Heh, I'm with you all about how bad walmart is.

But, let's not get too ridiculous, sometimes you should do the pragmatic thing. We all talk about how bad poverty is, so lets not forget that some people can't afford to take a strong principled stand on where they shop.

But yeah, going into a walmart is depressing. I just hope you all feel that way because of the oppresive environment walmart creates for its employees rather then because you're being forced to fraternize with the serfs who ca't afford to shop anywhere else.

75. We go every 3-4 months to stock up on dry goods and it's time.
The cost in gasoline is offset by the bulk buying I am able to do. There are articles only shop for on a quarterly basis. Sometimes we go even further to Costco--five hours to Chicago--when we combine it with at tript to visit our daughter and her family. I do want to do some holiday shopping though as well.

I abhor Walmart and the industries that feed it. I'm not sure what to make of your post though.

78. no, for many reasons- sensory overload among them-
My LD son couldn't handle the sensory overload that struck him anytime we went in there when he was very little- Oddly, it was his reaction to the place that helped us realize why we all got bitchy, impatient, unaccountably uncomfortable and just plain ugly every time we tried to go there-
It wasn't that my youngest son made the experience (that's an understatement) unpleasant- but HE made manifest the simple 'flaw' in such an overstimulating environment to begin with- mega everything- noise, people, buy!! buy!!! buy!!! GOTTA HAVE= MORE MORE !!! get outta my way= shut up= hurry hurry!!!

uggh. Despite all moral, social consciousness, quality, and other reasons, the store is an abuse to the psyche.

But then, "I'm sensitive, and I want to stay that way".

79. I am happy to say that I have not purchased a thing there,
with the exception of a hunting license where the funds go to the state, in over a year and a half.

81. Kickety
There was no option for "hell, no. No way am I setting foot inside that place so I can enrich a bunch of do-nothing bazillionaires at the expense of their employees, their suppliers, and their suppliers' employees."

So, I settled for no.
