Bush disliked by 73% in Canada
But 68% like Americans

Adrian Humphreys
National Post

Saturday, November 12, 2005

Canadians tend to dislike and fear George W. Bush, a new poll suggests. Seventy-three per cent expressed an unfavourable opinion of the U.S. President and 38% said they felt he was more dangerous to world security than Osama bin Laden.

Those results, however, should not be seen as sweeping anti-Americanism. While Mr. Bush is singularly disliked in Canada, the nation does not allow that feeling to taint its image of Americans as a whole. In fact, 68% of Canadians said they had a favourable opinion of Americans.

1. probably even more would like Americans, but sometimes
people in other countries get the idea that we are all Bush mouthpieces just by the default position of being American.

I heard a few Americans who have been overseas say that people love Americans, but they always want to engage in debates, as if they personally helped Bush make the decision to invade Iraq, haha.

Also, other countries think that half of our country is dumber than a box of rocks.

3. What a Relief!
The one thing that has upset me the most about this era is the fact that relations with our allies are so bad. I have always liked people from other countries. I am sad about how bad things have become, that they could actually hate me because I'm American. I am glad that Canada can differentiate between the American people & Bush. Thanks, Canada! :)

11. Canadians are so Cool; We are Lucky to Have Them as Neighbors
Canadians are so classy; Canada is one of the world's great countries, of course. I live in Michigan, right next to Canada, and they come over here all the time, to visit and work, and we go over there all the time, likewise. Most Canadians are just like upper Midwesterners, liberal Democratic ones--smart, pro-government services, polite. We are lucky to have them next door, and could learn a thing or two by paying attention to their opinions, and why they do or do not like us. There is only one country in the world that is allowed to have its Embassy right on Pennsylvania Avenue, Wash., D. C., along with the U.S. seats of government--all other countries have their Embassies nearby on side streets--and it is Canada.

It is a hopeful sign, during this surrealistically bleak and tragic time, to keep in mind that the people nearest to us, who actually know us and what we are like, generally like us, unlike the whole world that hates us by our sterotype and by hating this horrible bastard Bush. Thank God for our wonderful neighbors, the Canadians.

thank you

I do like to hope that most "decent" people in the world can differentiate between the Bush Administration and the "average american citizen".

I would welcome your visits to Canada anytime. When Bush visited I remember telling my mother I was 'breathing easy' when his plane was leaving our country. I can't remember if I've ever had uncomfortable feelings about a US President EVER. Don't think so. Reagan a little for sure, but nothing like this. It's comforting to know that "truth" is having it's day a little more in US media these days..that gives me hope.

14. We share a border,
And a lot else.

I don't dislike Americans in general, although I have to admit that I would prefer to be above the mason-dixon line. I have never felt less at home anywhere than in Georgia.

We share the good and the bad; NS and Nfld families took in US travellers when the planes were grounded on 9/11. My son and his crew barely escaped the 9/11 fiasco; his crew was working on lower floors, but had Jr. not had an urgent fiasco in Toronto that day, he would have been on one of the upper floors. That was a hellish day.....I didn't know he was here, and couldn't get his cell phone, it was directed through the towers.

I admit that I have used a picture of Nixon for target practice (tell me that some of you didn't do the same). My political awakening was a shared fiasco; the Bloody Run Creek and Love Canal environmental disasters set me on my merry way.

*shrug* We're different, but not that different......and we mostly have friends and family on both sides of the divide!
