Weekly World News: PRES. BUSH CONVERTING ‘WEST WING’ TO ‘ARREST WING’

OK. I'm only making fun of Capitol Hill Blue a little bit. But there's a reason this isn't a Lounge post. A writer once said that you knew revolution was in the air in France not when the Bastille was stormed, but when everyday peasants stopped nodding to their local aristocrats when they went by in their carriages. The same may apply here. You know Bush is in trouble not when Harry Reid slams his fist on the Senate floor but when pictures of Karl Rove behind bars, with the suggestion that he will "keep working while in jail," appear at every convenience store and supermarket checkout area in the country. So this is more than just a laugh. It says something about the turn in culture. T%he Weekly World News was also there at the beginning of Bush's precipitous decline, when they blared that Bush had a "SECRET PLAN TO INVADE THE MOON" (because there's oil there...).

Interesting developments, in any case...

1. We fret and fuss over the NY Times and the Wash. Post, but really
what people read is the tabloids. Once the tabloids are making fun of the Regime, the Regime is screwed.

2. WWN belongs alongside The Onion
This stuff has got to be satire.

3. Satire? I would prefer to say surrealism, but in any case
the point remains--when the Bushies become tabloid fodder, they are done.

4. agree -- & it was the tabloids that "broke" the "Bush drinking"
story, and continue with "marital strife in the White House" stories (saw that one in a supermarket line a couple weeks back...)

And don't forget the role the tabs played in pumping up the whole Clinton/Lewinsky imbroglio

6. LOL...obviously, I'm not saying it's true
Then again, it doesn't matter if it's true. What matters is that it mobilizes a cultural feeling about the Bushies.
