"Hold on, there's more to Pombo's latest joke: Purchasers of public lands would no longer be subject to federal requirements, such as posting bonds or complying with the National Environmental Policy Act. Keep in mind that hardrock mining takes a heavy toll on the environment. An example is gold mining operations that use a toxic cyanide solution to wash gold from ore.
Unlike his earlier proposal to sell off national parks, Pombo has yet to formally declare that his mining proposal is in jest. That means Americans must take seriously his proposal to sell chunks of public lands to private interests and fragment our national parks and forests with resource extraction and real estate development.
Pombo, who knows how to keep a straight face when proposing an industry rip-off of knee-slapping proportions, insists he is making a fiscally responsible proposal that will help reduce the deficit and spur rural economic development. "
