GOP memo touts new terror attack as way to reverse party's decline

By DOUG THOMPSON

<snip>

A confidential memo circulating among senior Republican leaders suggests that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and "restore his image as a leader of the American people."

The closely-guarded memo lays out a list of scenarios to bring the Republican party back from the political brink, including a devastating attack by terrorists that could “validate” the President’s war on terror and allow Bush to “unite the country” in a “time of national shock and sorrow.”

The memo says such a reversal in the President's fortunes could keep the party from losing control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections. GOP insiders who have seen the memo admit it’s a risky strategy and point out that such scenarios are “blue sky thinking” that often occurs in political planning sessions.

“The President’s popularity was at an all-time high following the 9/11 attacks,” admits one aide. “Americans band together at a time of crisis.”

Ya know what's disgusting??? I have no idea if this is true or not, but... I have NO PROBLEM believing that it could be.

1. THAT is the saddest part of all--it is all too easy to believe that those
thugs in the white house would even think of something like that.

2. Yes, that IS the saddest thing of all.
I'm known in my circles as being pretty well-grounded; I don't believe the Bushies have any behavioral boundaries.

3. Remember they wanted terrorists to bomb SF?
It would increase Shrubby's poll numbers and wipe out a bunch of pinko commie liberals in the City By The Gay.

5. The thing is, if that happened, it would be curtains for the GOP
This is no longer 9/10/2001. It's not even 9/18/2001.

After all that we've been through, another attack (I'll admit this may be wishful thinking) would move Americans to think that either a) Bushco is behind it or b) Bushco's policies made us too vulnerable in the end. In fact, they'd BETTER hope that there's no attack.

4. I posted that yesterday and got flamed for posting CHB
Then I did a thread defending CHB which created some wonderful debate. I think CHB deserves a place on DU but should be approached with caution since it's sources rarely can be confirmed.

6. Yeah... That's Why I Caveatted Myself, But...
If we could use this to get confirmation from a more 'reliable' source, it would make for one hell of a story!

8. Yeah, that's what CHB does.
They extrapolate what would be the worst-case scenerio within the White House, and they make up quotes to support it. The chilling thing is it's all so plausible.

I think CHB is essentially some guy in his pajamas who thinks he is running a cool and eleet black-ops website that undermines Bush by spreading plausible rumors... and there is some truth to that I'm sure, I don't know about the pajamas part thought.

What enables CHB to get away with this is the mania for background briefings and "attribute to a former Hill staffer" bullsh*t. CHB -never- has any on-the-record source for -anything-, and it seems normal.

7. Sorry, not believable, at all.
Another case of "too f'in good to be true". Which are exactly the type of stories that CHB specialize in.

The memo outlines other scenarios, including:

--Capture of Osama bin Laden (or proof that he is dead);

--A drastic turnaround in the economy;

--A "successful resolution" of the Iraq war.

GOP memos no longer talk of “victory” in Iraq but use the term “successful resolution.”

“A successful resolution would be us getting out intact and civil war not breaking out until after the midterm elections,” says one insider.<snip>

What a bunch of weasels ...coming up with a language de jur to cover their asses; while sending our kids off to die.

Whether or not the story is true, my statement is.

10. The Jackal Caliphs,
would probably love to coordinate something with Bush/Rove/Cheney again, just like old times. The "useful idiots" know that this helps Bush, so recruits just can't be found.

18. No Problem, Sir
It has been up many times over the past several days, in various forums. Because the source is not viewed as very reliable, none of them catch much fire, and they sink quickly into archive in the busy forums. I apologize for having made my comment in a way that might have left you feeling assailed, that was not my intention.

get the chance to see it. Dupe posts can sometimes be a good thing.
