More Wal*Mart dialogue
I think a lot of people are forgetting what drives Wal*Mart. Most Wal*Marts I've ever been in employ lots of "retired" people. No matter your feelings about WM and it's practices, it is the US governments fault that drives this corporation, as well as the pharmeceutical industry. Stay with me, here.

If people who are "retired" could afford to live or purchase medication without working, there would be no need for this place or places like it. W*M helps supplement "retired" persons low incomes. If the US government was more concerned about balancing the budget instead of creating deficits, we could take less tax money and more social security, so in the end, when people have put in 50+ years of labor, they could afford to live without having to supplement their low incomes and could also afford to purchase their life-saving medicines.

I think if asked, most people that work there would rather have a better job. However, there aren't better jobs to be had for most people that work there. Where else could the elderly work? Who else is going to hire the undereducated? Hell, even if you have a good education, it's hard to find a job these days.

The "leave a cart behind" idea is novel, would probably generate lots of publicity but in the end hurts the people we are hoping to protect in the long run.

Remember, when it's time for retirement, you too could become a W*M slave.

2.  Not to start an argument here but lots of elderly work at Walmart
because it is the only place to get part-time work.

Many older folks work there just to relieve boredom,so saying that they all work there in order to make ends meet is incorrect, although that certainly would be the case in some instances.

I'm retired and would love a part-time job but I hate retail so I wouldn't work there.

3. You're ignoring a key fact
The reason there aren't alternative jobs for a lot of seniors is directly because Walmart has driven the other jobs out of existence.

On average a community loses one and a half full time jobs for every part time job that Walmart creates.

Without Walmart, the seniors WOULD have better jobs.

4. I'm not advocating for Wal*Mart
I'm just saying that some folks are ignoring the obvious--that because, as a society, we don't care for our elders opportunistic corporations will take advantage of that.

P.S.
How many seniors do you know that want to work a full-time job?
