I think a lot of people are forgetting what drives Wal*Mart. Most Wal*Marts I've ever been in employ lots of "retired" people. No matter your feelings about WM and it's practices, it is the US governments fault that drives this corporation, as well as the pharmeceutical industry. Stay with me, here.
If people who are "retired" could afford to live or purchase medication without working, there would be no need for this place or places like it. W*M helps supplement "retired" persons low incomes. If the US government was more concerned about balancing the budget instead of creating deficits, we could take less tax money and more social security, so in the end, when people have put in 50+ years of labor, they could afford to live without having to supplement their low incomes and could also afford to purchase their life-saving medicines.
I think if asked, most people that work there would rather have a better job. However, there aren't better jobs to be had for most people that work there. Where else could the elderly work? Who else is going to hire the undereducated? Hell, even if you have a good education, it's hard to find a job these days.
The "leave a cart behind" idea is novel, would probably generate lots of publicity but in the end hurts the people we are hoping to protect in the long run.
Remember, when it's time for retirement, you too could become a W*M slave.
