Bloomington, IN-Group protests gays with flag burning, songs
From the Indiana Daily Student (Some might remember this store that had the flag burning a couple of weeks ago when two minors stole their pride flag and burned it. This is my boss's store, i have so much respect for him and his partner, they are amazing men)

Group protests gays with flag burning, songs
Church demonstrators target The Inner Chef downtown
By Gavin Lesnick | Indiana Daily Student | Tuesday, November 08, 2005

About 25 members of the Old Paths Baptist Church protested Monday afternoon outside The Inner Chef, chanting anti-gay slogans, burning a gay pride flag and brandishing signs with messages like "Fags Die, God Laughs."

Bobb Easterbrook, a clerk at the store, was the only person working there at the time.

"I was playing on the computer and somebody came in and said to look outside," Easterbrook said. "I was like, 'Ahh. Uh oh.' I'm going to hell, I guess."

Bloomington police officers responded to the scene but only to prevent it from getting out of hand, said Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Mick Williams. He said police did intervene, stopping protestors when they began burning the New Glory, a gay-pride variation of the American flag that features rainbow colors as the stripes. The Old Paths group began the day with a protest behind Woodburn Hall. Though the group has been to IU many times in the past few years, Monday's demonstration was larger than usual, complete with children playing instruments and singing songs beside the sign-wielding adults.

1. That is so Christian of them
We all know the passage from Mattew 64:11 when Jesus says to his disciples "Yeah verily, have love for all except fags, for they make me feel uncomfortable"

2. what a big surprise
I came out when i was in college in Indiana - KNOWING it was a red state (although we did not call them that way back then). Some things never change. Glad the police showed up to do nothing at all.:donut:

3. yeah
they don't do anything here, even though bloomington has turned into a huge pull for the gay community. I remember protesting last year and some of the police officers called us fags even though we were all with a female significant other. Well, what can we expect from police officers that are living in surrounding areas of bloomington.

6. Have they ever read the Bible?
I mean the part that Jesus said? After all, Christians are supposedly followers of Jesus and not Paul....and speaking of that one passage from one of Paul's letters....look at it in context. Paul talks more about prostitutes than gays, but I don't see any of these churches picketing the Mustang Ranch in NV. Also, as I recall, in that passage, Paul is really saying that Christians shouldn't be obsessed with sex, because it takes time away from prayer and contemplation. In their twisted way, these "Christians" are actually doing what Paul told them not to do--obsess about sex.

7. How tasteful
The protestors left promptly at 3:15 p.m., boarding a bus covered in large photographs of aborted fetuses.

What was at 3:15 that they could be "prompt" for? Is there a regularly scheduled aborted foetus bus route?

10. promptly
that's just the bad writing that is prevelant in the IDS. It is entirely possible that the aborted foetus bus was late.

Actually, they probably headed over to the busiest intersection in town for the afternoon traffic. I've seen them at 3rd & the Bypass -before they got the foetus bus - when they made children hold up signs w/ pics of aborted foetuses. Had a shouting match with one of them. He told me that my children (who were in the car) *should* see these graphic photos & that, after all, I probably let my children watch cable television.

15. You mean Michelle Malkin, Jr.?
She's awful. She defended our Secretary of State when he said that hurricane relief should not be the responsibility of the government, she has defended torture, and decried the media as unpatriotic for causing *'s downfall.

Do YOU remember that when some anti-abortion group called for the resignation of IU Trustee Clarence Boone because he had performed abortions 20 or 30 years ago that the IDS ran it as a front page lead? Of course he had done nothing wrong & the other trustees spoke in his defense & the story died.

But they have not touched the story of trustee Thomas Reilly - who was appointed by our Republican governor - and who is a corporate criminal. His company pled guilty to federal charges of price fixing while he was CEO/owner. The Herald-Times and the Indy Star ran columns on it, but the student paper wouldn't touch it.

16. i want to hear more
i am a senior at IU and i am from Dallas, Texas so i am starting to hear and see how corrupt and stupid this state can be. Not saying that Texas is any better, but they are similar in alot of ways. The girl i am talking about is a junior here adn she wrote some pretty awful and Fox News type columns that were stupid and not very good.

11. I think...
...it is a reference to John 3:15. I could be wrong, but since it was made such an issue (prompt), I feel that is why that time was chosen.

8. Ah, so it's okay to burn the GAY PRIDE flag...
...but not the American flag. I see. I get the picture.

So they won't mind if I torch a Nazi German flag in front of Westboro Baptist Church, right?

13. Good for a laugh, I guess.
Nutcases like these don't bother me that much. They're so ultra-marginalized they can't really do anything. Except bluster, which is fun to watch.

14. Wonder how many of my relatives participated.

I have family in Campbellsburg, IN where the Old Paths Baptist Church is located. They are probably members, and this would be their sort of thing. Most of my relatives hate gays. I don't even go to extended family dinners anymore because the moment I step in the room, they start up on the gay jokes.
