Spurred by paranoia and aided by the USA Patriot Act, the Bush Administration has compiled dossiers on more than 10,000 Americans it considers political enemies and uses those files to wage war on those who disagree with its policies.

The “enemies list” dates back to Bush’s days as governor of Texas and can be accessed by senior administration officials in an instant for use in campaigns to discredit those who speak out against administration policies or acts of the President.

The computerized files include intimate personal details on members of Congress; high-ranking local, state and federal officials; prominent media figures and ordinary citizens who may, at one time or another, spoken out against the President or Administration....

Those who have seen the list say it is far more extensive than Richard Nixon’s famous “enemies list” of Watergate fame or Bill Clinton’s dossiers on political enemies....

Those on the list include former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, former covert CIA operative Valarie Plame, along with filmmaker and administration critic Michael Moore, Senators like California’s Barbara Boxer, media figures like liberal writer Joe Conason and left-wing bloggers like Markos Moulitsas Zúniga (the Daily Kos).

“If you want to know who’s sleeping with whom, who drinks too much or has a fondness for nose candy, this is the place to find it,” says another White House aide. “Karl (Rove) operates under the rule that if you fuck with us, we’ll fuck you over.”

Who has access to see that info ? KKKarl's security clearance o.k. with this activity ? Abuse of federal agencies was one of Nixon's impeachment charges. Another special prosecutor, please !

14. I think this is one of the biggest news stories of the decade...

We have long known that many Dems cower at criticizing Reps--even when the Reps are behaving like fascist thugs with outrageous, unpopular policies (torture, lying us into a war, faking intelligence, screwing up Katrina, outrageous deficits, dismantling SocSec, etc).

I have always sensed--and many on DU have suggested--that Reps have some kind of hold on many people in government. I believe they "blackmail" politicians into submission, and this list certainly points toward that.

Remember what happened to Clinton when he traveled to NOLA and criticized BushCo for their post-Katrina efforts? NOT EVEN A WEEK LATER, those two women who accused Clinton of rape/sexual harassment--surfaced and were parading themselves around the Clinton library. Does anyone actually think these women acted alone? They decided to saunter up to the Clinton Library and engage in an orchestrated press conference? These women were waiting in the wings until the right person said "go".

This is how dissension is quelled. These thugs threaten people with the dirt they have on them. I'll bet there's a lot of dirt in Washington---affairs, drugs, prostitutes, scandals waiting to be released, etc. Most of them are amoral scum. Now, the Reps have figured out a way to use this stuff to gain and maintain political power.

I hope news of this list does not go away. I hope the list is revealed, and the crimes of EVERYONE are outed--so all of this blackmailing can be stopped.

This list controls everything.
