So Bush doesn't think vaccines are important?
In the Wall St Journal today there is an article on how vaccines aren't profitable. Is that all this country thinks about - profit? There should be a hue and cry. Bush obviously doesn't care one way or another only that he is happy making the big drug company directors richer at our expense. So what are we going to do to get the vaccines that we need?

1. Tough question.

Two things - get rid of this administration/repug controlled congress; overhaul our healthcare system.

The bottom line, as you've pointed out, is profit. It is not profitable for pharma cos to invest in development and mass production of (flu) vaccines that will be obsolete from one year to the next.

Taking care of humanity isn't on the agenda unless they can make a lot of money doing it.

Ideally, academia should be given federal funds to develop new vaccines, and a production plant capable of churning out millions of doses should be set up by the government.

3. Simple--if you don't get sick, you don't need vaccines.
That's the cornerstone of Republican Health Policy.

As far as the non-profitability of vaccines goes, well, if pharmaceutical companies want to develop, patent, market, or sell their products in the US, they should be legally required to manufacture X amount of vaccine.

And throw out that "can't sue the vaccine manufacturer" bullshit.

Fuck knows they get enough perks and tax breaks already. Why the hell can't they accept their share of responsibility, too?

7. it's true
I saw an interesting show about how antibiotics are not being researched because of money - that even as new resistant strains of killers like TB are cropping up, we are losing new weapons to fight them because they aren't profitable.

On the bright side, we'll have erections and big fake boobs when we die....

9. My line of work.
The amount of $$ pharma cos invest in new antibiotic research is dismal. With the increase in community-acquired MRSA infections, we are behind the curve in development.

And, the new agents that are coming out that can combat MRSA and other resistant bacteria cost an arm and a leg.
