How crazy would things get if a G.I. were filmed being tortured?
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 08:18 AM by mopaul
just imagine the indignant wailing and gnashing of teeth is a video surfaced from iraq of a u.s. soldier being humiliated, forced to shit in his own hand and smear it all over his naked body, forced to wear women's underwear while chained to a cell door, anally raped, or forced to stay awake for 5 days with no lawyer or visitors.

what if a female g.i. were forced to wear a dog collar and menaced by dogs while naked? what if female g.i.'s were forced to lie naked in a huge pile?

oh the outrage, oh the backlash against the alleged torturers!

well, expect that very video someday soon and just watch the fun and hypocricy explode.

would dick cheney defend torture then?

1. mopaul, have you been torturing soldiers?
I know its not funny... It just struck me as hilarious, the way you ended that.

You vividly described torture scenes (yes, I know where the accounts came from) and then said "expect the video soon).

2. the video may already be out there
how could maniacs in the middle east RESIST torturing a captured american soldier? if they actually haven't yet, i'm amazed. but i suspect that it will eventually happen. how could it not? we've declared torture of captives officially o.k.

3. When that video does come out, expect liberals and the media to be blamed
for reporting on the torture, and making it "such a big deal".

Remember the whole Newsweek thing?

Suddenly, any unrest or American deaths will be our fault because we want our government to stop torturing people.

13. I've been thinking the same thing,
It is just a matter of time until it happens. And now with Cheney INSISTING on torture, the time is probably drawing nearer.

4. This seems to be the one topic that Sen. McCain can actually commit to
without back sliding. If we ignore the other sides humanity then don't get your shorts in knot when they ignore ours.

7. You think McCain didn't know about Abu Ghraib prison and Gitmo?
Or the torture renderings that has been done for years that we all knew about? He knew. He is worried about being tried for War Crimes. He is a snake.

5. God help me, I almost wish we COULD see such a thing.
The Rethug conservatives will never realize that our government is torturing real human beings until they see a real human being (i.e., one of our soldiers) being tortured.

From what I read on their website, I can tell that the Roman soldier who shoved the spear into Jesus was probably a Freeper.

6. Well I have faith in their Moral Flexibility
I suspect they would ignore our own torture or minimize it and pretend that this torture much much much worse (and therefore justifies any torture we want to do).

I also suspect this would turn out to be our fault for wanting to mollycoddle the torturers. I for one have never wanted to mollycoddle anybody - but they will say that anyway.

8. Remember the outrage in some corners when they showed the
videotape of the U.S. soldiers that were captured? Outrageous! Violating the Geneva Convention! Blah, blah, blah. Those same voices had very little to say when the photos of naked Iraqi pyramids came out.

phoney up some emotional hate response, send in more troops.

10. Well we had pretty good
evidence of brutality after Vietnam and it didn't seem to bother us too much.

But I always comforted myself then by saying "what beasts. WE would never do THAT."

Now what do I tell myself?

11. I've been saying this for months
We can only expect our soldiers AND leaders to be treated as we treat others.

Not only does our actions against other soldiers lower the bar for treatment of our soldiers, but how would our so called leaders react if some other country decided the US was a threat and invaded us?

Our so called president did it, why can't some other world leader?

12. Americans were appalled and outraged when Iraq
showed an injured American POW on television
during the first Gulf War in 1991.
The news media pointed it out as a sign
of Saddam's savagery.

It was considered an attrocity when Iraq did it.

17. Your point is?
We've all seen photographs of concentration camp corpses, as well.

Doesn't mean the U.S. ought to become a torturer.

16. Perhaps the administration will sleep more easily,
and the sort of troops who will engage in humiliation and torture too, if they realise that even the worst terrorists despise this regime as such disgusting filth that they would not even contemplate descending to similar depths of immorality.
