Anarctic Iceberg Splits Into Three More Parts!

Nov. 4, 2005 — An iceberg about the size of the Hawaiian island of Maui has split into three pieces in the frigid Antarctic waters, the National Ice Center reported this week. Using satellite imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, the NIC discovered that the larger iceberg, named B-15A, calved into three smaller icebergs — B-15M, B-15N and B-15P. Two of the larger icebergs (B-15M and B-15N) are about the size of Grand Cayman and St. Croix, respectively.

The new icebergs mark the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth times that a portion of B-15 has calved, since the first calving event observed on May 30, 2000.

1. Alarming as in more evidence of the fast pace of warming?
...or what exactly does this break up of the berg mean?

3. I'm in no way an expert
on icebergs, but when iceberg's break up as fast as this one has, it raises alot of concern.

6. I worry about the viruses and bacteria that have been frozen
in the ice for millions of years that will be exposed during the melt down.

:scared:

I think 'Mother Earth' is pretty pissed at humans .. and will be shaking a lot of "fleas" off her back.

7. I know someone who is a researcher there
He said the breakup was due to thawing, tide and wave action. It doesn't
have any particular connection to global warming (in fact that part of
Antarctica is cooling slightly). As the pieces break away, they will melt faster and make navigation easier.

His field of research is in global warming, and has told me that it definitely is occurring, and the the general consensus in the scientific community is that it is being caused by human actions.
