Texas City Split Over Vote to Change Name
WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas - In the 1840s, a village of white pioneers sprang up amid several American Indian encampments. Its name, White Settlement, seemed fitting at the time.

Today, some city leaders argue the name is misleading and politically incorrect, hindering economic development in this 15,000-resident suburb of Fort Worth. On Tuesday, voters will decide whether to adopt a new name — West Settlement.

The proposal has angered many residents who believe the change is unnecessary and would cost too much. Signs have popped up in store windows urging folks to "Be Proud! Don't Let Them Discard the Heritage of White Settlement. Vote No!"

"It's a mixed community, a blue-collar community, and everyone gets along," said Ernest Rodriguez, who has lived here 14 years and opposes the name change. "The name doesn't have anything to do with the financial problems."

1. I was born and raised in Dallas
and I NEVER heard of "white settlement" Texas. NEVER!! What the f***!

Good god, change the f*ing name IMMEDIATELY, you idiots!

I'm sorry, I apologize. I have lived too long in a blue state with blue state feelings. I have raged too long against my roots, at long last, and see that if Ernest Rodriguez, who has lived there for 14 years, certainly has a right to his opinion, which I do not have.

Hola, Ernesto!

4. There is a part of Boston called White City..
Part of Jamaica Plain/Roslindale was called White City supposedly because Mayor Kevin White put his cronies, police and firemen in good housing. I alsways thought it was kinda racist as this area is for the most part surrounded by minorities.

5. Should the name of Blue Island, Illinois be changed?
After all, it could be considered degrading to the Blue Man Group.
How about 'Landlocked Island, Illinois?'

6. Hopefully you're not serious
the fact that the Blue Man Group does not constitute an entire people should be obvious. Secondly, there are no racial problems with such a name, and the name had nothing to do with race in the first place.

7. I'm not serious.
Just trying to be humorous. We surely need it in these dark days of bushworld.
(You never know about those blue guys; they could multiply rapidly. What would happen if they formed a ghetto in, say, Skokie?)

9. How about a Tat that says "White City"?
Bothered me until it was explained that was what they called the settings of the 1894 Columbian Expo in Chicago. The owner is HUGE fan of Windy City history...
