Shocking! Nat'l repubs oppose Arnold's redistricting measure ->
my repub dad just got a mailer today from Dick Armey, former repub house majority leader telling me I should vote NO on Arnold Schwarzeneger's attempt to appoint 3 judges to decide the boundaries of California congressional districts! This is arnold's favorite ballot issue!

The national republicans are AGAINST their own man :-)

Some quotes from the letter:

"If the thought of the democrats taking control of congress is frightening to you, then I hope you will join me in opposing Prop. 77"

"However, by voting for prop. 77 you may actually be voting to put congress back in the hands of liberal democrats."

"In 2001, all 45 republican state lawmakers unanimously voted for the district lines that now exist because they were the best set of lines possible to ensure republican control of the house of representatives."

"don't turn redistricting over to the same judges who support gay mariage and believe the pledge of allegiance is unconstitutional because it contains the phrase under god."

"On Nov. 8 help keep the republicans in control of congress by voting no on Prop. 77"

1. Actually not surprising
can you say Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals?

They don't realize that the judges Arnie wants in are not quite the nightmare they have there.... but I am not surprised...

Oh and still vote no on it, goes without saying

4. methinks the judges must be "retired" from the bench. glad to see
that the repubs are opposing their own guy, however :-)

8. I know that
but read again that letter, it was a very well coordinated attack agaisnswt the Ninth Court, not the state judges....

Nice to see them oposing their own guy too... I have the sneaky suspicion that we will see more and more rejection of the right... even if people beleive that Arnie is a moderate, all his actions have been quite extreme right

3. Vote no -- Arnie should lose on everything. Just because it's a waste.
And he's Arnie.

5. Arnold is supporting the redistricting issue in Ohio too
Schwarzenegger recently endorsed Ohio's Issue 4 to stop partisan gerrymandering.

6. Comical - a man without a party
We don't want him, and the Repukes are now distancing themselves from him.

Gee, that reasoning could apply to *, also . . .

7. Not only that but they already redistricted us in 2000.
I don't want to vote for a person and then find out that I'm no longer in their district in the next election. I think districts should be by geography and population, period. Instead we have a district here in the Central Coast that is about a mile wide from Santa Maria up to Morro Bay. I think this was the original intent of the law to allow for differences in population. Instead it became a tool for gerrymandering. Can you imagine if all the retired judges appointed are Republicans how our state would be represented?

9. The Central Coast district.....
stretches to down below Santa Barbara and it represents Central Coast interests regardless of party affiliation. It is not gerrymandered because it does not skip around the Republican areas. If we allow Republicans to have their way they would split up the district into several and extend them them into the Central Valley which would include much more Republican-oriented areas. At that point, watch for them to push for more offshore oil drilling and expanded coastal development. One reason I believe they are focused on this district is to get at the offshore oil and develop the environmentally protected areas. Do we want to leave the redistricting decisions up to retired judges who may be wheeling and dealing with Arnold's corporate interests?

Vote NO on 77!

congressional representative and gaining Bakersfield Bill Thomas, who really doesn't have our interests in mind either, speaking of the Central Valley. I am coastal enough that I can see the ocean from my front porch.
