How I Feel About the New Democratic Spine
"Today was an opportunity for the President to be candid with the American people about the status of democracy in Iraq, and when he will bring our troops home. Instead, the President offered little more than empty rhetoric, claiming that Iraq is the central front in the war on terror -- a position that is simply not supported by the facts. The President went into Iraq under a false premise, without a plan, and has totally mismanaged our involvement. Now he is trying to justify his actions with a series of excuses.

"Democrats are committed to fighting and winning the war on terror. But the Iraq war has made us less safe, and led to squandered opportunities to fight global terror because of the allocation of resources in Iraq." -- Representative Nancy Pelosi

"Let's remember what got the administration in trouble in the first place: secrecy, cronyism, and a willingness to ignore facts. We all know the vice president's office was the nerve center of an operation designed to sell the war and discredit those who challenged it." -- Senator Harry Reid

The Bush Administration must also cooperate with the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation. Americans deserve to know the truth about who in the White House -- and specifically in Vice President Cheney's office -- was involved in manipulating intelligence to build support for the war, engaged in a campaign to discredit those who tried to tell the truth, and orchestrated the effort to cover up that smear campaign. The American people also deserve answers about what role the Vice President himself played in all of this, and why people on his staff who were directly involved were promoted, not fired. It is time for the Vice President to offer candid answers to these questions." -- DNC Chair Howard Dean

MR. RUSSERT: Senator Schumer, there's been a widespread discussion that this is bigger than just Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame and White House aides; that it really goes to the core of the Iraq War, what cases were made to the American people about weapons of mass destruction and other systems and other analyses and other intelligence data. Based on what you now know today, do you regret having voted for the war?

SEN. SCHUMER: Well, no, Tim, because my vote was seen and I still see it as a need to say we must fight a strong and active war on terror. But I would say this, Tim, and I would take your point in a slightly different direction. I think what we've seen in the last several months is a White House in some real degree of disarray: the war in Iraq where nobody knows what the game plan is; the budget, which is just out of control and nobody seems to have a handle on it and could wreck our economy; the prescription drug bill, the major accomplishment and everyone's confused about how it's going to be administered. The Web sites don't even work. And, of course, Katrina.

BUYINGTHYME: What the fuck does the invasion of Iraq have to do with a "war on terror," Mr. Schumer?

Agreed, WTF does Iraq have to do with the war on terror? I think what they are trying to articulate AND DOING VERY POORLY I MIGHT SAY, is that the ball was in Bush's court to continue inspections ... blah, blah, blah.

I think the answer should be something like ... "knowing now that Bush would misuse the authority granted him ~ to finish inspections and be certain Saddam was of no threat to America, YES I REGRET giving this President my confidence and my vote." er uhm some such thing?

24. Same old spine, new media willingness to report it
Democrats have been making comments like this from the beginning. Now that Bush's numbers are lower, the media is reporting it.

It's all because of Katrina. Bush's crimes and dereliction got to them, even to the media. Reporters stood on bridges and watched children and the elderly slowly dehydrate while Bush did nothing. Many of the reporters had food and water as they waited, and felt the guilt of any survivor, and finally understood that there was no excuse for Bush's failures. They finally understood the human cost we liberals always understand faster. Finally the members of the media felt like they were in the same boat as the rest of us, rather than like the guests at the captain's table.

That's the only difference. The Democrats are doing what they've been doing all along. It's finally getting some coverage.

28. Just frustration.
I think people are just frustrated that nothing has happened, so they blame the people they think should be doing it. Same as when a football team loses. Everyone calls for the coach to be fired. No one notices the failures of the assistant coaches, the fact that the QB is playing with a torn rotator cuff, the running back has a torn hamstring, and the defensive back is coming off a back injury. It's the coach.

Bill Parcells went from hero to goat to hero in the last three years. He coached just the same in all three years, but one year he lost his starting QB, his running back, and half his receiving corps, and yet everyone claimed the game had left him behind. This year he got a good QB, has two running backs for when one goes down, and suddenly he's a genius again.

People notice results. The results now are prettier. The effort is much the same. Harry Reid called Bush a liar back in 2001 when it wasn't cool. People barely noticed. Now it gets reported. People claim he's grown a backbone. Nope, same backbone. Different camera angle, is all. Same with Pelosi, Kerry, Dean... Anyone on their email lists knows what they've been saying. But not everyone else does, because it just didn't get reported until now.

Instead of just sending letters, they're shutting down the Senate. That shows a lot more backbone.
