Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska is a cranky old man who, for the good of the country, needs to be retired. He's launched another attack on free speech and free enterprise.
From an email alert from the National Journal this morning:
Senate Commerce Chairman Ted Stevens is preparing a crackdown on "indecent" images shown via cable networks. The Alaska Republican's move could trigger a pitched battle with cable television channels over content regulation, but for now the senator is seeking to work with cable executives toward a compromise, sources said. A draft obscenity bill floated by the senator focuses on broadcast television and radio. It would raise fines for violations of the FCC's indecency rules from $32,500 to $500,000 per incident. But National Journal's Technology Daily has learned that an upcoming iteration of the draft also would tackle cable programming.
