HIV Outlaw gets 21 years
I know that most here at the DU are against the death penalty, but this is the kind of guy I think that we should execute. There will be a special place in hell for him.

From Washington Post
By Yolanda Woodlee

Updated: 1:23 a.m. ET Nov. 4, 2005
A former D.C. government worker who has known since 1996 that he has the AIDS virus was sentenced to a 21-year prison term yesterday for luring women and teenage girls into sexual relationships without telling them of the risks.

Sundiata Basir, 34, a onetime assistant to a deputy mayor, had unprotected sex with at least seven partners in what prosecutors called "a stunning picture of criminal recklessness." Four women and girls, including a 15-year-old, later discovered that they had the AIDS virus, prosecutors said. Basir offered no apologies yesterday in D.C. Superior Court, declaring at one point: "I'm not going to say anything. Every time I say something, I get another case."

1. The MSNBC account
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 08:33 AM by GrpCaptMandrake
is found wanting in details. The only mention made of criminal charges are the child sexual abuse charges. That's plenty heinous for me, but the story doesn't make clear whether that's what he's been sentenced for. It would seem the charges and sentence were a stand-in for something the prosecution couldn't necessarily get a conviction for: having unprotected sex while knowingly carrying HIV. Is that a crime yet? Attempted murder, perhaps? Attempted manslaughter?

A disturbing case. Most disturbing.

On edit: typing fingers a little slow this a.m.

3. Not Sure
I think that there is precedent for that somewhere, because you are using a deadly weapon and killing someone if you infect them with HIV on purpose.

2. He deserves a slow death in solitary.
Giving him the syringe would not be appropriate. Too quick and painless.

4. Or let the bastard die of AIDS
the death penalty is too easy for him. His death should be slow and painful.

5. That would seem to be
the most reasonable response. No AZT, no cocktails, no hospice care.

6. The ACLU would never allow it... and rightly so.
We are not uncivilized Bushbots... are we? Sure, this asshole deserves far worse than he'll most likely get, but our society should take the moral high road and not hold him to a different standard than any other murdering criminal. A lethal injection accomplishes the same goal as withholding medical care, and far more humanely, whether for better or worse.

8. I agree
We're NOT bushbots, Mojo, and that's why we don't execute him. When done in the name of the state, execution is still execution.

Put him on home confinement and let nature take its (in this instance) horrifying course.
