Senate votes to kiss the Arctic Refuge goodbye
www.wilderness-sportsman.com

"WASHINGTON Nov 3, 2005 — Senate opponents to drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge failed Thursday to strip the measure from a massive budget package as supporters of exploration argued that the oil is needed to help break America of its import habit.

Environmentalists, who believe strongly the refuge should continue to be off limits to oil companies to protect the area's wildlife, had acknowledged that it was a long shot to get the provision killed and now are concentrating on defeating the overall budget bill.

A vote on the budget measure, which includes a myriad of spending cuts from food stamps to welfare funds, was expected later in the day."

2. And three Democrats voted for it to happen
Akaka, Inouye and Landrieu. For crying out loud, when Coleman votes with the Democrats on something, there really is no excuse. Unless someone sicked a robotic Galloway on him ;)

3. Good
We've seen the results of global warming for some time.

This will make things worse.

Those in power wish us all dead so they can save the resources for themselves.

I think things are too late now, but by then the Earth will be a real pickle and it'll be better to be dead than living in the inhumane climate they are making for themselves.

Obviously NONE of this is any good, but the future for us seems rather obvious by now. So let them have their way. It doesn't matter anymore.

4. Or, in the alternative, you might hear this phrase in the future:
<scene> Poor, energy-deprived denizens huddled around the grill.

"Throw another Chimp on the barbie."

The poor will outlast "those in power." Less climactic change and therefore less shock to the system.

6. When they came

To make cities accessible only to automobiles I saw it as progress.

When they increased reliance on petroleum-based plastic I saw it as innovative.

When crops needed petroleum-based fertilizer and pesticides I saw it as necessary.

When they built the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline I thought it would relieve our reliance on foreign oil.

When the Valdez ran aground I knew something was wrong but let it pass.

When I saw us go to war for oil I prayed it would it would never happen again.

When they drilled the last wild places and despoiled it all, I knew then that a slippery slope lubricated with oil was our demise.

8. Didn't someone donate a bunch of land in Crawford to Cindy Sheehan?
Can we "explore" that land for oil and gas?

I realize it might (if we do it right) get messy...
