DeLay gets Democratic judge in Texas (again)
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyid=2005-11-04T011057Z_01_FOR404230_RTRUKOC_0_US-DELAY.xml

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Democratic judge was named on Thursday to preside over the money-laundering and conspiracy case against U.S. Republican Rep. Tom DeLay in an appointment made by the chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court.

Senior Judge Pat Priest of San Antonio will replace state District Judge Robert Perkins, who was forced off the case on Tuesday after DeLay's attorneys complained he was too staunchly Democratic to give their client a fair trial.

Priest was appointed by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, a Republican endorsed and aided by DeLay's Texans for a Republican Majority, or TRMPAC, a political action committee at the center of the criminal charges.

Jefferson made the appointment after a Republican judge in a lower court, B.B. Schraub, recused himself earlier on Thursday after prosecutors charged he was too staunchly Republican to make a fair choice.

3. I've read good things about Pat Priest. I hope DeLay
is going down! This, coupled w/the many Abramoff scandals, which the bugman's name is sure to figure into it, and this could be DeLay's perfect storm!

8. I wish I were confident that this is a good thing.
Judge Priest is a founder, I believe of some Texas Lawyers' group where DeLay's attorney, DeGuerin is considered a god.

Both he and DeGuerin are considered masters of evidence and procedure, and I expect DeGuerin will exercise his expertise in that regard.

This judge is likely to be persuaded by those moves.

I think I would consider Judge Priest a "nominal" Democrat.

33. So do you believe only a strong Democrat will rule justly in this case?
This is getting very scary. It all started when the Republicans said election judges could not be trusted and only machines could be trusted. Bush* ran on the theme of "I Trust the People" and before he even got selected to office he turned around and said people are subjective and only machines can be objective so therefor only machines can be trusted. It is at the point in America that Judges can no longer be considered impartial because of the Republican efforts to discredit the Legal system. It is the only thing they truly fear and they need it under their complete control...

Founder of the Criminal DEFENSE association and the lawyer who vouches for him in KOS is a criminal DEFENSE attorney. Plus, one of the posts above says he and DeGUERIN are a mutual admiration society. Fairness is all we can hope for.

28. I found two articles
Prosecutors win round in baby-sitter's case

District Attorney Bill Hill won another round Monday in his fight to discredit Judge Manny Alvarez's treatment of a baby sitter convicted of child abuse. Judge Pat Priest, appointed to hear post-trial motions after prosecutors accused Judge Alvarez of favoring defendant Maria Hurtado, set her bail at $25,000 and ordered her to stay in Dallas County. Judge Alvarez has acknowledged doing defense attorney-like research during Ms. Hurtado's recent trial. After jurors assessed an eight-year sentence against her, he told them they had erred. He let the illegal immigrant go free while appealing, setting the stage for her to return to her native Mexico. Prosecutors said that meant she might never be punished for causing severe permanent brain damage to a baby named Heaven Preciado. They asked for a minimum bail of $50,000, but Ms. Hurtado's court-appointed attorney has said she couldn't afford to pay anything. She remained jailed late Monday.

AND ---

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The case has all the elements of a high-stakes undercover investigation -- wired microphones, a surveillance camera and a secret informant.

But the alleged crime doesn't involve cash, drugs or jewels.

The loot was 11,350 pounds of cooking grease.

Mary Ann Abbott, Leonel Aguirre and Tomas Aguirre are charged with illegally buying more than $1,500 worth of stolen grease for Imperial Grease Service, one of seven companies nationwide that buy, refine and sell used grease.

Their trial began Monday before Visiting Judge Pat Priest.

Now Delay can't find a Republican in Texas. Even his own lawyer is a Democrat who gave money to his opponent.

Which leads me to believe that perhaps Democrats make good lawyers  or Delay is just a dumbass,
