Do You Avoid Big Name Oil Co's When Buying Gas?
After reading the record profits all the big oil companies are reaping, I'm making an effort to buy from smaller companies. I never bought from BP because they were always overpriced.

Our fuel purchases aren't a big deal anymore, now that we have our Prius with it's 500+ mile range (on under 10 gallons). Still, I buy from the following places:

- Costco (esp. since they donate to Democratic cases)
- Petro Express/Citgo (they're the cheapest in the area)
- Valero (never heard of them before two months ago, who are they?)

Anything "wrong" with these 3 sources?

Which big oil tycoon do you give your money to?

1. CITGO is the only station I use. Our Costco doesn't sell gas.

19. I plan on getting a Citgo gas card.

Also, have Costco card, but it isn't very conveniently located for me. Right now I mostly use Chevron.

I'll take care of it myself...

7. Yes, it is true...
But I have to confess that I only buy from the big names. Only a few refineries and they sell their gas to everyone, but it's the additives that are added later that make the difference. Out west, I only bought Chevron. Here in the Midwest, I buy BP and Quik Trip. Shell waters down their gas, and having lived in Alaska during the Exxon Valdez spill, I will NEVER buy Exxon or Arco gasoline.

'Their Social Responsibility Policy, however, is not confined to company performance. Amerada Hess has partnered with Earthwatch in the UK, for example, to create thirty fellowships for secondary school teachers to take part in environmental research projects. They have funded libraries, schools, and hospitals in Equatorial Guinea, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands. They have provided disaster relief in Algeria, Jakarta, and Colombia - and provided $5 million to the families of victims of the World Trade Center attack. They support the UN Declaration of Human Rights and became a signatory to the UN Global Compact in 2002, a voluntary initiative to incorporate human rights, and labor and environmental principles into standard corporate practice. Further, Hess adheres to an affirmative action policy and was among the first companies to include sexual orientation among their equal opportunity commitments."

16. Thank you so much for that info.
I try to buy Citgo, but there isn't one real close by. There's a Hess down the street though.

20. For the 2,243rd time ...

Just because it says "Company X" on the marquee doesn't mean gasoline refined by that company is in the tank.

I ran a Citgo station for several years. We sold gasoline refined either by Texaco or Phillips-Conoco. Why? Those loading racks were the closest to the station. We accepted Citgo credit cards. That is all.
