We have no shot in 04...Dems are useless and need to be rebuilt
I am a liberal but I have very little respect for the current crop of Democrat leaders..They are spineless on the whole and can't seem to muster any plan of attack against the Evil Empire of the GOP...Now, I'm sorry to say it, but we need to have another alternative and a mainstream one at that, to replace the Democratic party...If you read Michael Moore's newest Book at the end there is a chapter outlining how to beat Bush next year and he BASHES the Dems for all the same reasons we do and he is right...He says Dems have told him privately, that they are writing the 04 elections off because they don't see themselves being able to win!!!!!!!!!!!! What fucking pussies!~....Christ..how the hell can such a small minority of views have total control over the country????? Anyway, I'm feeling more and more pessimistic of our chances next year as I never thought that I would witness as corrupt an administration that gets away with everything, in my entire life!!!!!! I could never have fathomed it...And apparently neither could anyone else......I don't know what we should do but i'm not feeling good...the only thing I can think of is a COMPLETE rebuilding of the Democratic party from a Grass roots level..Get an agenda and get candidates that have Balls and are not afraid to say what needs to be said, Like Dean and Clark, and get the old pieces of shit out of there!!!! Start from scratch and get out to the people...One town and one state at a time..Then maybe we will have a shot in 08...Next year is all but lost i'm afraid...

3. My first recommendation is for you to do something
1. Are you a democratic committee person? If not contact your local office and keep calling until they call you... and then find a vacancy and fill it.
2. Walk your neighborhood and register people to vote.
3. Write letters to the editor, editorial pieces and get the message out.
4. Run for local office.

The Dems haven't failed as much as the people of this nation. Ahnold was elected the governor of CA because people didn't bother to find out if he had any constructive opinions or if he stood for anything.

Dems who voted against the war lost seats, like in GA, because they were labeled unpatriotic and the people of this nation, and those states, fell for it.

12. I am Getting certified to become a voter Registrar and trying..
To pass the word and educate people as much as possible..that's what I'm doing in conjunction with attending my candidate's meetups and making connections, and trying to become even more educated on what's going on....Someday I may very well get frustrated enough to run for office but I feel i'm a bit hardnosed for it...I tend to want to hit someone when they are lying and or not doing the right thing so politics is probably not the best venue for me...:)

14. THIS is the answer
Thank you BH for expressing it so well. (To the thread starter)Instead of sitting on your ass bitching about it on this board, get out and DO something about it. All politics is local, my dear, and if you're not getting out and doing something about it, you are part of the problem, my friend.

20. I concur
I saw flush out the current crop of corporate Democrats and flood the party with the neo-liberals. We should get people like Obama elected in Illinois. We should get the activists involved. It's about time we take out these carreer politicians.

Jesse Ventura was right about this....it's about time we get rid of them.

11. Yeah, I heard that one before.
Most recently in 1992, when conventional wisdom said the Dems were doomed unless Mario Cuomo ran.

I'm an old lady and I've been watching elections since Eisenhower. You are very, very wrong. Shrub is goin' down.

16. He went down last time but he's in office now isn't he?
I don't trust the Repugs and I feel the Fix will be in no matter what...You are right though, if Clark or Dean get on the ticket we have a good chance....I really believe that the Democratic leadership doesn't believe it though and is gearing for Clinton in 08...I despise what the Dems have let happen to out country and make no mistake, THEY LET IT HAPPEN.....AND EVEN HAD A HAND IN IT...With their siding with the administration of Iraq...We have ineffetive leadership in the Senate and house. Also, ineffective represention in the Fed Govt. as well...Really bad...I stand firm that The Democratic party needs to be rebuilt and as far as a presidential ticket NONE of the current Senators or Represenatives should win, or in my view will win the primary..It's either Clark or Dean and they are both outsiders...The rest should drop out now so we can put our effors behind someone who actually has a chance and actually deserves a chance at leadership. The indsider candidates have proven themselves undeserving of our support....

15. Dean Is Saying
we need to change the Democratic party into one that stands up for our democratic ideals again. He is raising funds with small donations in an attempt to break the the death grip of big money on our party. If you want change, work for Dean. We never, ever quit! We can and will win because we must!

18. We CAN and WILL win...but not if we're whining.
EVERY major poll number has Bush below 50%. Even if you don't believe in polls, you have to assume that this number relates to something. It relates to the majority of the country NOT liking the man or his policies.

Dems are acting like wimps. Even the General. They are still acting on the ridiculous notion that in order to win the White House, they need to act more like the party they think needs to be removed from the White House.

Why? Because they are all rich fat-cats just like the guy they want to remove. And all of the "terrible" policies he has initiated have benefitted them enormously. Maybe they're shallow enough to take the tax break for a few years, to pay for the kids orhodontia or college, or a new Cigarette boat for the summer place...then they'll go on the attack. Who knows.

BUT, we, the real democrats, still need to get Bush OUT. That is all that is important. Any one of the nine will do a better job, except Lieberman, who will do the same job foreign-policy-wise, but with even more disastrous results (Jewish commander in chief during a holy war with the Muslims? Hello, McFly??!!!)

One thing the republicans have been successful at is portraying the dems as whiners. Be it true or not (although I can't think of a better way to describe Lieberman), they will portray us that way. And, they use the "you have no plan!" line, despite the fact that every candidate DOES have a plan, posted on their web sites. But they're being pussies on the podium. This is an ANGRY nation, and instead of tapping into the anger the dems are just wimpering campaign slogans.

How many of the top 1% vote? Even if every one of them did, there is the other 99% to deal with, a significant percentage of whom would love to hear this direct message:

"I WILL SOAK KEN LAY. I WILL SOAK JEFF SKILLING. I WILL SOAK GEORGE H W BUSH, AND HIS WHINING ASS LITTLE BOY, TOO. I WILL TAX THE SWINDLERS TO PAY FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF OUR GREAT NATION FIRST, BEFORE THE RECONSTRUCTION OF DICK CHENEY'S OIL FIELDS! I WILL BRING FAIRNESS AND PROPORTIONALITY BACK INTO THE EQUATION! AND THAT WILL BRING BOOKS BACK TO YOUR SCHOOLS. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS BACK TO YOUR CHILDREN. IT WILL BRING HEALTH CARE TO THE 45 MILLION AMERICANS WITHOUT IT. AND IT WILL BRING PRIDE AND A FEELING OF COMMUNITY AND ACCOMPLISHMENT BACK TO AN AMERICA RAPED AND PILLAGED BY THESE 21ST CENTURY ROBBER BARONS!

Can you just see the crowd going nuts? So what if it pisses off the fat cats. How many of them are there? How many of US are there?

Stop whining. Start winning.

BTW, any candidate or candidate's aid reading...you can take my speech. Free of charge. Just visit my web site, maybe buy a shirt.

23. You are RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If ANY canditate said that and came out with REAL and serious Anger against the Right, they would Ignite a FIRESTORM and could win...Get the disenfranchised voters out there, even a small percentage and we can win....That was an outstanding post!!!! DEAN is the closest one to what you are describing but you are right, even he is still acting too timid and too much like the party he is trying to replace....BALLS BALLS BALLS< ANGER ANGER!!!!! Read some old Truman speeches..some of the things he says about Repubs and very candid and harsh and that kind of tough talk is one of the reasons he is still remembered today...INSPIRE ME CANDIDATES!!!!!!

19. There MUST be hope...or we might as well give up...
...and allow the Bushies to do what they please. Oops. That's what the party is doing NOW.

- I've spoken with many Democrats over the last three years. Many of them ARE convinced that the party is actually TRYING to lose the 2004 election...through inaction and capitulation to the Bushies.

- Why would they want to lose? One would first have to ask why they're intentionally letting Bush* have his way on the majority of issues.

- It's the stuff of Twilight Zone. The 70s brought us Nixon..who was made to pay for his crimes against our country. In the 80s...Reagan and Bush were taken to task for Iran/Contra. In the 90s...Clinton was...well...impeached for being a Democrat.

- Three decades of presidents being made accountable to the people in one form or another and then...nothing. And THIS so-called president makes Nixon look like a boy scout.

- No one likes weak politicians unwilling to stand up for the people. And I can't believe that our Democratic leadership simply isn't aware of what's going on. There's no excuse for their inaction.

21. here comes the clue bus!!
Hop aboard!!!

First of all, defeatism is exactly what the GOP is hoping we indulge in. Don't fall for it.

Second of all, you seem to forget how politics works. Here's a story that will help you to see the error of your ways:

There was this girl, let's call her "Julie". She really began to notice how ugly things were getting in America when the biggest concern of the nation was whether or not the President got a blow job. She had noticed a pattern of constant brutal attacks from Republicans and took a closer look at politics.

She came to realize how terribly wrong things had gone and though seeing flaws on both sides saw that the Democrats were hands down in the right as it were.

Flash forward a couple of years.

Julie had discovered the local Dem party, as Underground as they were. She got in touch with them and they welcomed her warmly. Julie got involved, helping out a great deal with fundraising. Julie's efforts were noticed and appreciated. Julie was invited to join the E-board. Julie assumed the membership chair when the current one moved away.

Julie continued to work hard on fundraising and growing membership. Julie participated in as many events as possible, sharing info like books and columns from on-line. Julie's enthusiasm rubbed off. Efforts increased and subsequently so did results.

Recently the local party has reached unprecedented bank account balances. Things are humming at the local headquarters. Momentum is building. Successes are being realized regularly.

While not single-handedly responsible for the positive changes in the local party Julie has made and continues to make a difference by mere involvement. Positive attitude is crucial.

The moral: To achieve positive change hands-on efforts is the only way to go. You cannot change the way the party works by spreading a message of hopelessness and you cannot affect much change posting on DU.

Get out there and get busy!! Bring a positive attitude and do not accept failure.

Julie

24. Re: Democratic Leadership
I think the DNC and DLC both figured this election was a write-off a few months ago. I don't think even the leadership knew how totally inept the Bush* Administration is, or, how vulnerable they have become.

I also think the leadership was caught totally off guard by the amount of resolve of the rank-and-file. They were also caught off guard by the amount of latent anger in the voting public.

The 2004 election is winnable and the leadership sees it now. They have not been good at focusing the party yet and will have to wait until after a leader emerges from the primaries. They are walking a very thin line right now because each of the candidates has their own constituency and the leadership doesn't want to allienate any one of those constituencies. After a clear leader emerges, then they will focus the attention towards the repubs....

Just my humble opinion.
