Gallup: INTERESTING numbers on Alito, filibuster and nuke
Nov. 1, 2005. N=603 adults nationwide. MoE ± 4.

"If you were convinced that Alito would vote to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, would you, personally, want the Senate to vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court, or not?"

"Suppose all or most of the Democrats in the Senate oppose Alito's nomination. Do you think they would be justified or not justified in using Senate procedures, such as the filibuster, to prevent an up-or-down vote on his nomination?"

"If that happens, the Republicans in the Senate would consider changing Senate procedures to eliminate the filibuster on judicial nominations, which would ensure an up-or-down vote on the nomination. Do you think the Republicans in the Senate would be justified or not justified in doing this?"

2. What slanted questions
Notice how the last two are framed as the Democrats preventing "an up or down vote". This is right out of RNC talking points.

A neutral phrasing would diminish the Republican positive result by 10 points, IMO.

4. Wow
Poll after poll proves how Bush and the republicans are going in the wrong direction but of course they don't care about that.

13. That is why we like to have "Links"...
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 08:33 PM by Gronk Groks
...so that we can verify the source material. Without a link I am very likely to discount the material substantially.

Welcome to DU, Anonymity. We have our customs, but the customs have reasons behind them. That is why we have news articles sectioned off in the Discussion areas, so we can access the sources directly.

Courtesy is also in high demand here. We give all the benefit of the doubt and try to refrain from unnecessary 'flaming'.

10. Actually heard, "Oh, he wouldn't REALLY overturn Roe [via SC nom]"
From just a few of the moderate Republicans who didn't like W, but really didn't like Kerry. There was no reasoning with them then.

18. But the majority of Americans are not reThugs...
...only about a third, and they OWN the reThugs. Of course if they overturn Roe v Wade the reThugs will be sent into the wilderness on the national scene, but hey women will lose the right to control their own bodies so everything is ok.

Pardon me while I :puke:

14. Well Thanks to The GANG of 14 -
which includes my senator (Salazar) Scalito will most like be confirmed.

I'm don't like that my senator is member of a gang. Poor Sen. Salazar apparantly can't make his own decissions. Needs a gang led by a former Republican to speak for him.

16. I don't trust these numbers.
(Small sample, etc.)

While I can't claim to know, I think that more reliable numbers are neither as good as some believe -- nor as bad as others fear.

More generally, I have problems with how statistical (and other mathematical) models are often used in practice.

17. The third question is awful...
"If that happens, the Republicans in the Senate would consider changing Senate procedures to eliminate the filibuster on judicial nominations, which would ensure an up-or-down vote on the nomination. Do you think the Republicans in the Senate would be justified or not justified in doing this?"

They wouldn't be changing Senate procedures legally. They would be breaking the rules, pure and simple. The question should read

"If that happens, the Republicans in the Senate would consider ignoring the parliamentarian and the standing rules of the Senate to eliminate the filibuster on judicial nominations, which would ensure an up-or-down vote on the nomination. Do you think the Republicans in the Senate would be justified or not justified in doing this?"

20. It is Gallup, they've been pandering to the RW for years...
...and if even THEY can't turn the question to make the reThugs look good, you know the news is bad. At best the RW talking points turn it into an even battle. WE have to start controlling the talking points.
