BREAKING: Rockettes on strike!
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 06:02 PM by Bluebear

Rockettes on strike supporting Union musicians. The orchestra's contract expired in MAY and the Rockettes refuse to high-kick to electronic music or replacement musicians. You go, girls!

...actually, I'm not sure which union it would be, but almost EVERYONE working in a theater nowdays (professionally) is unionized.

14. Yup, everyone from the stage hands to the orchestra pit
And the theatrical and musicians unions are nothing to screw with if you are in the business of running a theater. They can shut down a show in nothing flat, and they all tend to stick together. If the union says you need to hire 3 trumpet players, you hire them -- even if you don't need them...(but don't get me wrong: I like unions, and performers' and stage crews' lives were nearly unbearable before them. On balance they are unquestionably a good thing).

15. From this musician
getting ready to head out to rehearsal I say a great big THANK YOU to the Rockettes.

We lost our Union chapter years ago and we are losing our gigs routinely to recorded music. Thing is, dancers and singers and actors don't like the recorded music and the performances are sub standard without the ensemble of the music with the other performers.

You go girls. If I ever get to New York and you are dancing again I will go and support you.

16. WOO-HOOOO!!!! Unions must stick together.
The Rockettes have a good memory. Management fired all the Rockettes a few years ago and held open auditions to replace the dancers, some who had been part of the institution and tradition for more than a decade. The musicians were going to be made to perform seven days a week, more than one performance on Sundays, and without overtime. The members were threatened with either scabs from Hurricane Katrina-land or a tape. They had no choice but to strike.

17. Oh, great - another Faux headline
"Rockets strike New York! - Film at 11!"

I can hear it now . . . and when people fitfully tune in, it's about the Radio City "Rockettes" . . .

TERRA TERRA TERRA ! ! !
