CHANGE AT AIR AMERICA: Tom Athans, husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and founder of the progressive talk company Democracy Radio, has joined Air America as executive vice president in charge of its new syndication division.

At Democracy Radio, Athans developed and produced the Ed Schultz show, the most successful progressive talk program. This led to some speculation yesterday that Schultz could come to Air America.

There also could be an on-air change at Air America, heard on WLIB (1190 AM).

Mark Maron, co-host of "Morning Sedition" since the network signed on in early 2004, said yesterday on the air that his contract had not been renewed - though a spokeswoman for Air America said the network is "very appreciative of 'Morning Sedition'" and is "still in negotiations" with Maron.

Marc said on the show yesterday that he never even got the chance to talk about money. They simply informed him that his contract was not being renewed, and that he would no longer be the host as of December 1. He said he would be willing to talk about doing the show for less, if they'd ever brought it up.

20. best use of the most important time slot

The morning commute time slot is very important. Like most places AAR is the only left radio station that we have in Dallas.

I actually enjoy Morning Sedition. I am not convinced that it is the best use of a very valuable time slot. It has a Wayne's World quality and will only ever attract a limited audience.

A more serious morning news program might attract a larger audience. I would like to see AAR acquire a news program foundation for its editorial programs. Something like Pacifica or a hard left, edgy and uncompromising version of Morning edition might work.
