Matt Cooper on Larry King: Bloodless. Everything wrong with media now.
A disgusting shrug of the shoulders, even when asked directly about it being terrible if we were led into war under false pretenses. No emotional reaction. When does he pick up that new Mercedes? That was on his mind more than his interview. Once upon a time we had journalists with passion, morals and a desire to track a story to its conclusion, no matter where it led. Now we have the very wealthy and very detached Matt Cooper. I spit on him and others like him. They should be ashamed of themselves, if they had any sense of anything except their own exalted status.

2. You hire only wealthy Ivy League kids and this is what happens.
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 09:52 PM by MookieWilson

On C-Span, ALL the young journalists seem to be Ivy Leaguers.

Hell, Bob Woodward didn't hire Maureen Dowd for the Washington Post because she "wasn't Ivy League enough."

3. I don't think his wealth is relevant. People across the economic
spectrum supported and opposed the war.

4. Right, but how many in Ivy League circles have someone in the military?
Or were in the military?

7. Again, this is a non-issue. How many kids does Ted Kennedy have in the
military?

Opposition to the war is about a lot more than having a family member in the military.

16. I expect diversity in the press. I've given up having it in Congress.

And Ted Kennedy knows he inherited a wad of cash and that life isn't a meritocracy.

Journalists earn too much money to care about the same things as "middle America" cares about.

21. Neither would I.

It's not just about income.

But the Washington/NY press has a serious diversity problem.

24. Way to move the goalpost. The OP was about which schools the
journalist attends, yours is about income, now it's a more nebulous diversity.

9. It's about a journalist's job, and what motivates them.
And how they carry their job out. Matt Cooper is a nonentity. And that's the tragedy.

6. yes
Having recently returned to the US after four years abroad, I find Larry King (and DID you see Mike Wallace on there LAST night?) totally unwatchable. Bubble. Bubble. Gold-plated bubble.

10. For tips on journalism, see "Good Night and Good Luck" --
It's about Edward R. Murrow, the much celebrated CBS broadcaster who stood his ground and really REPORTED the news in the 1950's. Fabulous movie, co-written and directed by George Clooney, who proves he's not just a pretty face.

See more at:

Limited release, but might go wider when Academy Award nominations are announced.

In peace,

12. WTF? A stand up comic? It's in his biography
http://www.time.com/time/columnist/cooper/article/0,9565,518881,00.html

"Matthew Cooper was named TIME White House correspondent in June 2003. Cooper returned to the White House after serving as TIME Deputy Washington Bureau Chief where he helped manage the magazine’s Beltway coverage.

Cooper returned to the White House where he covered the President Clinton from 1993 to 1995 for U.S. News & World Report. In 1995 and 1996, he wrote the "White House Watch" column for The New Republic, and he later served as a National Correspondent for Newsweek from 1996 until 1999.

In the 80s, Cooper was an editor for The Washington Monthly and was Atlanta Bureau Chief for U.S. News & World Report. He has written for multiple publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Slate, The Washington Monthly and Los Angeles magazine.

Cooper moonlights as a stand-up comedian and was named "Washington's Funniest Celebrity" in 1998. A New Jersey native, Cooper is a 1984 graduate of Columbia University in New York City. He and his wife live in Washington, D.C. with their son."

13. You know, he kind of looks like a comic -- and his delivery reminds
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 10:23 PM by Radio_Lady
me of someone whose name I can't remember -- maybe it was Allan Sherman???

Matt Cooper stated that he got caught in the middle, and I can't say I blame him for everything.

Hey, while we're talking about comics -- what about George Carlin, Jon Stewart, and Bill Maher? They all are astute writers, too -- frequently writing their own material and books.

Cooper was pretty bland. Seemed pretty indifferent about the leak.

25. That's what makes the "liberal media" shit so amusing
I went to school with broadcast journalism majors. They actually had to take tests naming all 100 senators, and most failed.

It was funny to hear them say "Why the f--- do I need to know that shit?". Anyone who thinks there's some sort of agenda out there is an idiot.
