I think he's got serious back-up on this.

He'd have to, wouldn't he?

1. I agree.
I read that a "simple" majority can end it. As the Rethugs are the majority, why can't they raise a "simple" majority? I don't think it is just Dems. I think the Rethugs approached Reid and wanted this as well, so they would not look like traitors (or cowards, like they are).

5. They had the caucuses lunches just before.
What do you think the subject was?

Yes, it seems obvious that most Democrats subscribed to this plan and they probably discussed it.

So thanks to the Democratic caucus in the Senate. Reid is their leader, but most were probably involved in that.

6. According to the Standing Rules
It takes only a motion and a second to the motion to go into closed session. The debate on the motion itself and the vote whether to stay in closed session all happens in closed session, away from the public, away from the cameras, and the only people allowed into the Senate chamber are the Senators and the people with high enough security clearance to be allowed to stay in.

So it just takes two Senators to bring about a closed session. No back up required at all, really. But Sen. Durbin, who seconded Reid's motion, was also quoted as saying that if the Republicans don't get down to brass tacks on the issue of the Iraq war, they'd better get ready for this motion to come back again and again and again.

So I think Reid's got his caucus solidly behind him, even if he doesn't technically need it. And Durbin has warned the Republican leadership that all the other business of the Senate is going to be seriously curtailed until this matter gets some kind of resolution.

8. Great timing!
I wouldn't be surprised if this has been in the works for a while among some of the dems.

This week's convergence of disasters makes it clear that Reid's gambit is the only healthy, normal thing to do for a senator who cares about his country.

Finally...some sanity. Kudos to Reid and all who will stand up against a dysfunctional, dangerous government. A pox on those who won't.

11. No idea, but I called my two senators to tell them I support Reid...
... and I asked them to support him, too!

Go to senate.gov to get your Senator's phone number! :)
