Employers forcing employees to accept direct deposit
Do you have your pay check direct deposited in to your bank or credit union? Are you like me and like getting your pay check in your hand and having to deal directly with cash at the end of every week?

I work for Manpower, the worlds largest temp agency or so they boast. They are forcing me to accept direct deposit of my pay check or else. They don't really elaborate on the or else thing but they are making it clear that all Manpower employees must be paid through Direct Deposit from now on.

Can an employer do this and force the employees to accept payment in what ever manner the employer sees fit? It seems unfair to me and really want to deal with cash and keep the Debit and Credit cards out of the picture as much as possible.

2. Yes, they can
As long as you have access to the money at the promised time.

In reality, you get it quicker than a paper check, and it is much safer.

Where do you cash your paper paychecks at?

3. I actually loved direct deposit.. the money was available BEFORE

you could pick up a check and stand in line at an atm or in a bank..
Pay day was Thursday, and sometimes the checks didn;t get there until 2 pm.. But with direct deposit, you could call the toll free number and see that the money was in your account at midnight (wed night)..and they also made the car payment automatically for you if you had one (credit union for both)..so we never had to transfer from account to account

I could then drive through the ATM and withdraw money, or I could go inside and withdraw any amount I wanted.. They cannot prevent you from removing the amount of your check. The company has guaranteed the bank that the funds are there, so they cannot "put a hold" on your money..

and it gives you an open account at a bank, in case you ever need one :)

4. I use direct deposit by preference.
In the past, I've had paychecks get lost in the mail and in one case, even wrongly delivered to a neighbor who was out of the country for a month. Direct deposit is secure and hassle free, and because I have direct deposit, I also get unlimited free checking with my credit union.

It's probably a much more streamlined, economical process for a company to do all of its payroll by direct deposit, rather than cutting/mailing some hard checks and direct depositing some. You can always just go to the bank and withdraw the money right away, if you prefer to deal in cash.

I don't have to go to the bank and show 18 peices of I.D. proving who I am if I want to take out $20 with the deposit (for a fee), I don't have to worry about a hold being put on my funds (they are 100% cleared as soon as they hit the account), which might cause a check to bounce (even though the bank has my money they just haven't 'released' it yet thereby creating a charge AND a fee), and when the pay-check is due on a Monday (I get paid 15th and last of the month) the money is actually in my account (fully cleared) the preceding Saturday.

All around it is very beneficial and convenient for me...

6. You should still get...
...a paycheck stub if you want something to actually hold in your hands and check to make sure everything is correct. At least, that's the way it works at my job.

8. Direct deposit is so much more convenient than having
to go to the bank on payday and stand in line.

10. One problem I see
If direct deposit is mandatory, how would those without bank accounts get paid?

Other than this question, I'll agree with the other posters on this thread that DD is faster/safer/more convienent than traditional paychecks.

12. I love DD.
Go online and check that the money is in the bank. Make payments online.

Beats the hell out of having to fool with a check and waste time going by the bank.
