Excuse me if I'm a bit underwhelmed...
22 months into this investigation and the FBI FINALLY gets around to interviewing Plame's neighbors to determine if her CIA status was widely known? Sorry, but that smacks of ineptitude to me... as in let's hurry and patch up this oversight.

Plame's identity was leaked. Witnesses lied about it in spades. A reporter was jailed for 85 days. And all we get is THIS?

To think I wrote all those Fitzmas carols, Gordon Lightfoot, and Elton John song parodies. Bah.

go on to other things!

As you go on, if you happen to hear a really huge clamor in the distance, pay it no mind. That'll just be the sound of millions of Americans screaming for the resignation of the president and vice president. Just ignore it. No biggie.

THIS is not small potatoes.
How often does the Vice President's chief advisor get indicted before resigning?

7. Libby will be ancient history a month from now
Libby has been exposed as a schemer and a liar, and the trial will have a narrow focus on that. IF Rove is indicted, the charges will be similar. It's extremely unlikely that Fitzgerald will pursue anything else. The Watergate analogy may well turn out to be wishful thinking.

People who think this is only the beginning are in denial. It's over and we were screwed. Fitz's prosecution is really lame. He could have charged conspiracy, outing an undercover CIA agent and violations of the Wilson's civil rights.

39. Hi obsqueesha
The Washington Times is a right-wing paper known to print lies. I beleive it is owned by the Reverend Moon, who gives a lot of money to ultra-conservative causes. Maybe another poster can verify this for me.

As a few others have answered, Valerie Plame-Wilson's identity was so secret that her neighbor of 24 years thought she was a consultant or a soccer mom. Nobody knew her identity except her husband, her parents and her brother. The right-wing noise machine has been lying outright about her status.

When I first asked you where did you hear that her neighbors already knew that she was CIA, that was the first that I had heard that. I was only trying to find out where did you see that. When you sited the "Moonie Times", that is not a source that I use for my information. I didn't want to insult you, I was just trying to find out where did you hear this. Welcome aboard. One set of interviews occurred in the neighborhood of Bush administration critic Joseph Wilson, whose wife Valerie Plame was outed as an undercover CIA officer. Agents asked neighbors whether they had any inkling that Plame works for the CIA.

"They wanted to know how well we knew her, which is very well," said neighbor David Tillotson. "Did we know anything about her position before the story broke? Absolutely not."

There are other stories that source from the neighbors.

I beleive a neigbor, not a BS "CIA Agent" source for the right wing Reverend Moon Washington Times.

17. What I worry about...
is that Fitzgerald just gave these scumbags a blueprint to get away with anything.

Rove can just go into the special prosecutors' office and say one thing to cover his ass, then when he's contradicted the special prosecutor allows him to get away with it as a mere lapse of memory.

It's bullshit that Rove would not have remembered discussing Plame with Matthew Cooper. When the leak came out ALL those liars would have been tracing back their steps to the things they had done and to the people they had talked to in order to construct some plausible denials.

If this story disappears, as I think it will, Fitzgerald will have encouraged those assholes.

24. I'm also underwhelmed.
Only one indictment and not likely to be any more. People were saying there could be up to twelve indictments. I suspect no one will ever be held accountable for the outing of Valerie Plame and there probably will be few changes in this administration. Furthermore, I doubt that Libby will ever spend a day in jail. He'll probably wind up with probation and Rove will continue doing what he has always done.

47. The last time I checked
we were still living in a democratic Republic where one is allowed to have a different opinion. I am a lifelong democrat so you can just stuff your insinuation that I am a right winger. I feel this case is going nowhere. I have a right to express that opinion. When you try to silence those with whom you disagree, it is you who are behaving no differently than the right wingers who object to dissenting views.Your attitude reflects intolerance.

I'm wasn't engaging in any wishful thinking last week, and I'm not doing it now. We'll see.

But the VP's top man has received a criminal indictment, and it's already opened a public dialogue about the way the Bush Administration got us into Iraq. I don't see how anyone can view that as a loss for neocon opponents. I just don't.

37. Are you kidding me?
What we’re witnessing is a classic formula from a TV crime drama.

A crime has been committed. The perps have been identified and separated from one another. Each is told that The Other Guy is pointing the finger at THEM! (cue Sam Waterston saying "You better level with me or you're taking the Fall all by yourself...") Trickle, trickle, trickle.

The prosecutor goes back and forth, playing one perp against the other, and with each new tidbit of info they volunteer, the Big Picture starts to emerge with greater clarity until the crime is solved. Cue closing credits. Dissolve into commercial.

Fitz has effectively cornered the perps - Rove and Libby can't strategize with one another any more and it's every man for himself. Rove has taken the bait, is fishing for a plea bargain and is cooperating, hence no indictments for right now. Rove is playing the part of Big Pussy in the Soprano’s!

Libby, on the other hand, is playing hard-ass so he’s been treated to “the squeeze”….tell the truth or face hard jail time. While he professes his innocence and demands his day in court, a public trial is the Cabal’s worst nightmare…no one can risk having their dirty little secrets revealed under oath and WH hierarchy refusing to testify “on the grounds that it may incriminate me” will be damning testimony in and of itself.

Libby. Rock. Hard place. He wonders about the witness protection program but realizes his days are numbered. There is no good ending to this story for him. And Rove isn't entirely off the hook yet either.

This is just the first few minutes into the drama and we've gone into a commercial break. There's more to come.

51. I'm sorry, but there's no excuse for a disingenuous comment like this.
After reading your post, it seems as though you're more under-read of the facts in this case...

This is good:

"Plame's identity was leaked. Witnesses lied about it in spades."

Now, where you start to lose it:

A reporter was jailed for 85 days.

While she's 'technically' a reporter, (the NYT's Jeff Gannon) her jailing was well deserved. She is beholden to the Bushies and her trumpeting of demonstrably false WMD claims through her reporting led us to an illegal war and caused the deaths of thousands of our troops and innocent Iraqis. She should go to jail forever for that.

"And all we get is THIS?"

Now you're totally gone. It's been over 130 years since a sitting admin. official was indicted. The investigation is continuing, and Fitzgerald is "looking into other matters" not "mopping up, or tying loose ends"
There are now reports that Bush may be under criminal investigation!
Fitzgerald met with Bush's CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYER on Friday!
Do you know who was the last president to hire a criminal defense lawyer?

Nixon.

"all we got is this?"

Look past your nose.

We got a Senior Administration Official indicted, and
high level officials including the President and Vice President under a CONTINUING CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. Meanwhile, indie media, blogs, PAC's are conducting a parallel investigation which will further damage them.

ALSO, we got the House Majority Leader under indictment.
We have the Senate Majority Leader under Justice Dept. and SEC investigation.

We have the Abramoff scandal which involves MANY high level Repukes heating up.

Bush's poll numbers are in the toilet along with the the GOP's poll numbers.

All we gotta do is Flush.
