Can Bush name Jeb as VP if Cheney is indicted?
Kennedy had RFK as AG, so in the event of this possible current "emergency" is it possible to name Jeb, since his record on all the leaks and coverups is negligible or totally non-existent?

This is one sure way to bolster sinking polls, rebuild base and assure dynasty.

I don't put anything past them and Congress would probably say ok.

1. He could...
if I understand it, there is actually no restriction and not even oversight by the Senate....

if would be politically suicidal for him to do it though.

5. The Senate has to vote on it to approve
I doubt they'd say no.

19. Nope, the entire CONGRESS in joint session confirms
Amendment XXV.

Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

24. I'm sure there are a number of senators
who think they'd be a better choice for the job: Frist, Santorum, Lott, Whazzizname from Oklahoma....

Besides, Jeb has a number of his own scandals to hide.

RFK was never the Vice President.

12. No, but he was AG
Nothing prohibits a president from appointing a family member to a cabinet level post.

29. Actually today a President is prohibited by law
from appointing a family member to a cabinet position. It was passed after Kennedy was out of office.

18. For appointing a brother to a very high-level position.
The precedent of course is ridiculous because JFK's administration wasn't sinking in corruption and treason. RFK was appointed for positive reasons, not defense.

10. He can nominate, both House and Senate must approve
anyone that is qualified (i.e. over 35 years old (that means Barney is out of the question, as is either of the Bush twins), born in the USA, etc.) both the Senate and the House of Representatives must appove his nomination.

25th Amendment to the Constitution (1967)
Passed by Congress July 6, 1965.
Ratified February 10, 1967.
Replaced part of Article II, section 1 of the Constitution, originally written in 1783.

Section 1.

In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2.

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

handles hurricanes better and would trump him in public opinion.

to appoint anyone after these indictments go down. Just my 2 cents.

15. Cheney indictment unlikely
From everything I've read, an indictment of Cheney seems pretty unlikely. But assuming it happened, or that Cheney resigned even if not indicted (fat chance), anyone Bush nominates as VP is proabably going to have to publicly state that they're not interested in running in 2008. Otherwise,it will divide the GOP.

16. I'm glad I found this thread... (a request included)
I've been arguing with my family for weeks about whether or not there was an actual law passed after RFK was AG that prohibits nepotism in the highest level of government. I say that it is just hugely frowned on and they say there was an actual law passed.

I'm right, right?

:silly:Jeez, this sounds like a "Dear Abby" letter!:silly:

Anyway, can anyone be so kind as to give me a link to actual proof to convince my family? Many thanks in advance!

17. Such a move would be disastrous politically
my guess is even many Republicans in the house and senate who would vote on his confirmation would oppose such a move.

Since Jeb is from Florida and Drunky is from Texas, he could nominate him as VP.

25. i only see him doing this if he knows something we dont...
...like pending impeachment... then he is sure jebbie would pardon him once he resigns. It would be political suicide ... but then again wouldn't impeachment too? And this would have a lot less consequences.

Now in my little dream world, what would be absolutely fabulous would be for the Dems to win back house and senate in '06 and for bushie to try this stunt then.... it would DEFINITELY get voted down then. Right now I don't trust this repuke congress as far as I can piss.

Or some other member of his cabinet. Then again, Nixon picked someone who had nothing to do with his administration to avoid the taint when presenting Ford to congress.
