I saw the first Christmas advertisements up last night when I went to buy groceries, and it got me to thinking, "Hey, it's not even Halloween yet! WTF!?!?!??!!" It also has the added bonus of drawing attention to a Christian holiday, which I'm sure also played into their thinking...

their holiday merchandising right after the back-to-school promotions ended. Usually the lower end stores start before the higher end retailers. This year they anticipate lower than usual holiday sales, so some may be promoting more than usual to get a more sustained buying pattern.

Some retailers rely on picking up as much as half of their annual profits during the winter holidays, and that's when the economy is GOOD. I'm not the least bit surprised if they're starting even earlier this year.
