How Democrats can win young men.
Talk about an issue that burns them up, especially if they are single: high car insurance rates. Why are insurance companies allowed to practice this kind of discrimination? Propose legislation to make gender discrimination illegal in the setting of insurance rates. If it's illegal to do it on a racial basis, it should be illegal to do it on a gender basis too.

3. I agree...
why are some people being penalized because they are within a certain group. Isn't that a form of discrimination???
Think about it! Can't young women get into accidents too??? There is no monopoly on stupidity.

5. Young women
are less likely to get into a major accident resulting in property damage. Car insurance is based on statistics so those who are most likely to force an insurance payout are forced to pay more into it.

I like this system because I don't want to be paying for some teen's mistakes.

8. So you are saying...
that if stats show black people or Hispanic people cause more accidents they should be charged more? That is the logical extension of your argument.

6. Indeed
I am now 27 years old, and I have cleared that age (16-25) when insurance rates are obscenely high, but I went for 9 years with no tickets and no accidents, yet my rates never seemed to go down. They were criminally high.

I was, however, rear-ended last year by a 24 year old female illegal immigrant with no liscence or insurance.

10. What my 70 year old dad says
They told me when I was 19 that my insurance rates would go down when I got older. It's been 50 years now and they've never gone down!

good idea
You are right, talk about a specific issue that affects young men directly, especially if it's about money and the economy. Lots of young men respond well to angry rhetoric too, look how the Freepers do it.

Partially unrelated rant about car insurance:

My spin would be slightly different - many young middle class men are using subsidized car insurance anyway - the government provides the actual insurance, which is re-sold through agents. The agents jack up the price, add all sorts of unnecessary coverage, and have to make a profit for their advertizing, etc. It's a scam.

The community could provide the insurance, like they do now, without the agents getting in the middle and jacking up the price. That could be a winning issue, especially for local races in states where insurance is high (New Jersey anyone?)

4. it's not always gender that determines your car insurance
It's also moving violations, where you drive, what you drive, how far you drive and number of claims. My car insurance is pretty low (I'm a 25 year old male)...a good deal under $100 a month. When I lived in Arizona, it was nearly $200 a month because Arizona is a border state.

Sorry, I don't think it would have much resonance...

9. this issue..
I agree! Even though teen boys are something like 500% more likely to get into wrecks than girls, they should not be penalized UNTIL they get into a wreck...Then they deserve to be gouged...not before
;)

11. I'll give you this much
If DEMS made insurance reform part of their platform they would be able to get business and individuals on line. They barely get any campaign money from insurance carriers anyway.
