Colin Powell: "We're not doing bad at all diplomatically!"

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday the United States is "not doing bad at all" diplomatically, despite anti-American sentiment over the war in Iraq.

"If you stand back a bit," Powell told an audience at the University at Buffalo, "you might see we have done very well in most parts of the world."

"We are where we are," he said. "We have to stay the course," he said to applause.

7. I think his role in Mai Lai disqualifies him for "good man" status.
Not to mention what he's done subsequently. These things show him for the person he is. He went along with everything and now that he's caught in the wringer he'll do whatever makes him look good. Screw Powell.

12. Point taken, MrSlayer. I was trying to give him some
latitude for evolving from then to now, but I just could not get past the U.N. speech.

That completely ended it for me.

17. Colin Powell was also involved in the Iran Contra mess
Powell would be a good man if his loyalties were to America and its Constitution and not to his superiors.

14. It is sad, isn't it?

I used to respect the man a lot, but when your Commander in Chief does the things * did, it's time to stop being the "loyal soldier" and start being the loyal American. Powell's legacy has been reduced to him being a neocon puppet. What a shame.

On edit: Don't get me wrong ... I don't feel sorry for him - he caused his own mess and I hope he goes down with the rest of the cabal. I just think it's sad that someone who "coulda been a contendah" has fallen so far. What a waste.

18. Not sad at all, and he is not a good man. His son is a piece of crap
and this is just his way of supporting Condorliezza IMHO.

20. Why linazelle, if I didn't know better, I'd think you
didn't like the Powells.

It's sad to me because he could have been a landmark political personality and instead sold his soul to the devil.

If you want it stronger than that, you have to look elsewhere than my desk.

27. He is indeed a narcissistic opportunist and classic fodder for
the bush cabal, and another lying repuke as well.

He is also a man with more on the ball than a John Ashcroft or a John Bolton. Powell's smarter than a lot of people in the rest of Bush administration. He and Armitage knew what was going down almost instantly and stood as strongly as they could against rumsfeld, Myers, Feith, and the rest of the WHIG-types.

Powell has done considerable outreach for underpriveleged minority kids, something you would hardly ever find in other Bush admin. officials, if at all. This is good.

Do I like Powell? Nope. I agree with the harsh language against him, but I see veins of nobility in him -- betrayed by the address at the U.N. As I posted, that's the cut-off point for me in absolute terms. Is it partisan of me to use absolute terms after that speech? You bet it is.

I continue to find it interesting that 9-11 occurred when Colin Powell was out of the country -- in South America.

15. Fine American Prospect article - it calls for Colin Powell to come clean:
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 11:08 PM by Nothing Without Hope
After all, Scowcroft and even Wilkerson have now spoken some truth about the Bush 43 Administration foreign policies:

thread title: New Yorker/ Goldberger: "Breaking Ranks" - SCOWCROFT's BLAST OF BUSH 43

And Powell, who definitely knows what he is doing, continues his obedient lie spinning.

http://www.prospect.org/web/page.ww?section=root&name=ViewWeb&articleId=10493

Well, Colin?

Don’t good things come in threes? Wilkerson, Scowcroft ... A certain someone should be next, if he wants to salvage what’s left of his reputation.
By Michael Tomasky
Web Exclusive: 10.24.05

Last Wednesday, October 19, was the day that Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, the former chief of staff to Colin Powell at the State Department, decided he couldn’t take it anymore. In a lunchtime talk to the New America Foundation moderated by Steve Clemons, Wilkerson ripped into the Bush administration “cabal” that was guilty of “aberrations, bastardizations, perturbations” in a decision-making process that shocked him.

Then, a few days later, Jeffrey Goldberg's New Yorker profile of Brent Scowcroft hit the news cycle right between the eyes. Scowcroft, like Wilkerson, was known already to be an opponent of the neocon way of doing things. But neither had ever spoken for the record as they did last week, and the cumulative effect was nuclear.

But it occurs to me that there are still others who need to speak out -- which takes us back to October 19. The same day that Wilkerson was blasting away at the administration in Washington, far away in upstate New York, the man whose staff Wilkerson chiefed, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, was delivering a speech on the current world situation to a gathering at the University of Buffalo. Surveying the landscape from Europe to China to the rest of Asia, Powell concluded: “We’re not doing bad at all.”

Has anyone in this town embarrassed himself in the last five years more than Powell? At least George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld believe this toxic gimcrackery they’ve been peddling to us. Powell never believed it, and he still peddled it. There’s a word for that, and it isn’t “honor.”

(snip)

Another excellent American Prospect article, the cover article of the November issue, is how Porter Goss has all but destroyed the CIA:

...there's a call for you on the clue phone.

BTW Colin, did you hear that Rosa Parks died?

Maybe you should shut your pie hole for a minute and think about what it means to have real integrity.
