being one of the usual suspects who would, and all.

But I agree of course. It was his campaign that got me into the Dem Party in the first place after all.

39. Um....Glenn was not the first man in space, or even the first American.

Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Union was first. First in space, and first to orbit, during the same flight.

Alan Shepard was the first American in space. In a sub-orbital Mercury flight.

John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth.

I take nothing away from John Glenn. He was a progressive Democrat amidst staunch conservative Republican astronauts. And in a reversal of conventional wisdom regarding Repubs and Democrats, Glenn was morally upstanding and faithful to his wife, while his astronaut colleagues in the Mercury program were running around drinking like fish and screwing everything in sight.

He recognized early on the important work the Democratic Party had done on behalf on the American people during the Depression. Offering federal employment to out-of-work skilled laborers, sound fiscal policies that leavened the horrible spiralling of the American economy, and hope to those in despair. He wanted to be a part of that progressive movement, and he has done us all proud.
