Jumping From the Sinking Ship of Empire: Vermonters Move to Secede From USA

James Howard Kunstler, author of the book about Peak Oil The Long Emergency, will be the keynote speaker at The Vermont Convention on Independence to be held in the House Chamber of the State House in Montpelier, VT on Friday, October 28th, 2005. Sponsored by the Second Vermont Republic, the convention, which will begin at 9 am and conclude at 5 pm, is open to the public and free of charge. This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.

1. why? Are they confused about who will be king?
Couldn't resist.

You mean, secession. There's an important political difference.

14. South Carolina wants to become the United States of Jesusland.
Vermont wants to get the hell away from the people who would move to South Carolina.

16. You mean the Californians who want to move to SC?
The whole move-to-S.C.-and-turn-it-into-a-theocracy project is directed out of California. Weirdly, FoxNews reported on this. Even more weirdly, Bob Jones Looneyversity has denounced the project.

17. Here's their site:

I think it's a great idea.

Evacuate all of the sane SC residents, move in the loonies, build a wall and moat around the new nation and don't let anybody out without a visa.

13. My home state.
If anyone would do it, Vermont would.

I will move back there by the end of next year even if I have to hitch-hike and sleep in snowbanks.

19. I would live in Vermont if it wasn't so freakin' cold!!! I grew up
in upstate NY about 2 hours west of Burlington. I have lived in Los Angeles for 13 years and have not missed the snow and the cold once!!

I do love Vermont, though. The people are great!

22. Yeah, the winters are long.
I used to sit in front of my wood stove looking at seed catalogs and dreaming of spring...

I took up snow shoeing and really enjoyed getting out in the woods when it was so quiet and peaceful.

20. I constantly daydream about moving there
I often look at home listings on Realtor.com . I am just unsure about what part of the state or what town I would like to move to. I would like to live in a largish town or smallish city that was pretty, and culturally alive or at least close to some cultural vitality, ie - music, theater, restaurants, etc. Don't really care about skiing or such. Suggestions?

23. Anything in the Northwest corner would suit you.
You'd be no more than an hour away from Burlington.

I grew up in North Hero which is an island on Lake Champlain.

Before I moved here, I lived on the Canadian border, 45 minutes away from Montreal and Burlington-all the culture you could want.

Check out this website on the Lake Champlain Region.
